I don't imagine many of you signed up to listen to my spiteful fist-waving on any given topic, but I hope you'll indulge me here: if there's one thing I hate, it's online censorship crusades.

It's a tale as old as pop culture. Some group of joyless souls find out something sexual exists, and then campaign to eradicate the "offensive" content from the face of the Earth so that no one gets to enjoy it.

As you might think considering my line of work, this practice upsets me. The latest bit of fun these misguided folks are trying to snuff out is anime. Just all anime. Apparently since anime often depicts busty women with large eyes and youthful facial features, the entire medium is only for pedophiles now. Joke's on them if they think their crusade is going to change anime though. From what what I've seen, our Japanese friends largely don't give a fuck about American cancel culture. They make what they want to make and I love them for it.

Anyhow, this is Hana Uzaki from a series called "Uzaki Chan Wants to Hang Out." I've never seen the show, but she's become the poster girl for the whole anime censorship thing on Twitter lately. An image of her was used to promote the Japanese Red Cross, and people lost their minds. (Said image is included above.) Apparently being short and busty is now considered a perversion of nature. What really gets me is that the character is 19 years old in the story. That's practically middle-aged by typical anime standards, so it seems strange that Uzaki specifically was the last straw for so many.

Anyhow, rant over. If you made it this far thanks for reading! I'd love to hear your thoughts on this if you want to share them.

Yes, because context is crucial in the process of making valid decision here. But that takes a lot of work and thinking and time. Those who are aware of that don't rush to make such decisions and often decide to let be instead. And then comes the turn of those who aren't.

Also these people don't even pay for anime or mangas, they stream or download everything for free online and expect to be catered to. They never left the selfish child mentality and it's ruining Western society.

It's the ravenous Twitter mob that demands everyone conform to their subjective views, especially when it comes to Social Justice. Anything that steps out of line in their view is verboten. The dumbest thing people did was start appeasing them, they're never satisfied. I'm glad Japan gives them the finger on a regular basis.

Kudos707

Hey thanks! I did my best to match the style of the original pic there. :)

Reinbach

I do begrudgingly think it has its place, to a degree. But like most things that can evoke change its easy to abuse, and I think this cancel anime thing is an example of that.

Reinbach

Jeez, that seems pretty severe. Abby of all characters too, which a whole different group was complaining about for very different reasons. That's some layered irony.

Reinbach

Maybe I should check it out. Slice of life is my favorite genre anymore.

Reinbach

That's the hope! May they never cave.

Reinbach

Well I can't speak for their looks but if there's one thing I bet they all have in common it's being bored. Bored and lazy and delusional if they think posting an angry tweet makes them part of a societal movement that's going to make a difference somehow.

Reinbach

I didn't even notice that until you mentioned it. Yeah that does look pretty weird.

Reinbach

I guess it can vary depending on the situation, but I'll agree that showing fear or doubt can be a bad move when squaring off against a cancel mob.

Reinbach

We certainly haven't given them any reason to start caring, that's for sure. I can't speak for all of them, but I imagine a good chunk of these complaining Americans were never anime fans in the first place. So why change to appease them?

Reinbach

A good practice I think, though not a very common one these days it seems.

Reinbach

The show is... ok. I watch a lot of anime, and this one is funny, but i like more other manga/anime with the same premise, and there is a LOT. Personally i don't like that the humor is like IN YOUR FACE and is full blown in cliches and fanservice, but i will not deny it can be funny. Now, i really find annoying that some people feel offended by her desing, but what bothers me most is that, even though i can understand that they don't like her, they disrespect the artist and people behing the show and the desing. It's almost as if they want to "unify" everything under their standars to be ok, and that's full bs. Aside from that, actually i never thought i'd see you drawiung her, and i LOVE IT. I really like how you keep the fang and how happy she looks.

David

I don't give a fuck about american cancel culture too.

eF..cz

Sweet to see Hana Uzaki in your art style! I certainly hope that you will draw her mother next, Tsuki Uzaki (who should be appearing within the next two episodes. Yeah, there are so many on twitter that really don't like Uzaki, simply because she has huge boobs. Even going so far now, as to have Abby (Last of Us 2) punch her in the face. I'm also glad that the Japanese don't really care too much about American cancel culture going on.

WarSapphire

I agree with you, I also watched the first five episodes and it seems to be a chill, slice of life type of show. I liked it, but it seemed really harmless. I don't condone pitchfork wielding anyway, but it seems weird that this anime/manga got them riled up.

Static Noise

Alas "Cancel Culture" is becoming synonymous with "your not allowed to like anything anymore." But your right in that its not going to stop the Japanese from making what they want anyhow.

Lord of Nightmares

It’s a bunch of unattractive and/or self-righteous bitches , male or female, who demand that everyone and everything in the world change to accommodate them. Pure and simple

Lord Washington

I like that you gave her an actual fang. The flesh colored lip-tooth honestly creeps me out.

SpiceofVice

The only way to deal with cancel culture mobs is to tell them to get fucked. If you give even an inch, they will bury you alive.

Kalandros

Japan gives zero shits what the cucked Western SJWs thinks of their characters.

Kudos707

I can't see anime adaptations ever catching on and doing well personally. The fans won't like anything that isn't 100% true to the Japanese source material. And if the fans won't watch the movie, what's the point of paying for the rights to make it?

Reinbach

I love what you did with her, she wears her rewards well. As for the rant it's the same one I've done from time to time and my wife has joined in. We both are of the opinion that if you don't like it or don't want your kids to see it turn the TV or computer off and don't watch it.

Bob Fink

well it still works regardless and due to perspective and me not looking for too closely it looks like your normal stuff. so that's great

That black guy

Agreed, there are some serious double standards at work in the comic book industry.

Reinbach

One would hope.

Licorice Lain

Yeah I couldn't speak for the character I'm afraid. For all I know she's a soft-spoken deep voiced intellectual on the show. XD

Reinbach

Thanks!

Reinbach

for sure! Though in this case she does have a slightly bigger head than I would normally draw, as I was trying to match the character's original proportions at least a little.

Reinbach

I’ve largely ignored this one as a none issue. I’ve literally met women that look like this. So it’s just short sighted on their part and unlikely to make anything happen. The only one of these I got into was that awful ghost in the shell movie. But it was pretty much doomed from the start.

Jerald Wilson

Yeah I hate that shit. I’m more of a comic book fan and that shit happens all the time with comics. You draw the slightest bit of cleavage or give a character a large bust you’re ridiculed for it. So many prudes our there. Although what I really hate is the double standard with comics and especially comic book movies. Can’t have a sexy lady but every single comic book movie since the first X-men has at least one scene of the shirtless male hero.

And it is the only positive. I can't stand this kind of moe, shrill ass voice nonsense.

Licorice Lain

She is the mascot for the red cross that's positive

alex baker

THAT'S why I have been seeing everywhere. Ugh, now I have to associate her with something positive (I hate characters that are designed like this).

Licorice Lain

Well said, the art is beautiful and we all want a short stack in our life. Also give if you can

alex baker

it's kinda funny how she fits your style of drawing female characters without much changing
