As for your question of whether to do long or shorter licks, I prefer the longer ones. I like sensual audio, so the long "aggressive" licks work, where shorter quicker ones can feel more aggressive than intended (for me!) But that also rolls into variety! Try long and short licks, but mostly long ones. Additionally, try other licking sounds, like I imagine wet sounds and different movements of the tongue.
