Dinner Time

Harry accepted Luna and Cho's invitation to join them at the Ravenclaw table, and when they sat down Padma, who had been filling her plate, looked up and smiled at them, moving to join the three of them. The four of them were joined by Su when she arrived, which posed a problem for Harry to act normally since she didn't know that he was aware of what she was doing earlier.   They were just starting to eat when Professor Dumbledore stood and called for attention.   

Looking up at the staff table, Harry could see the McGonagall, Flitwick and Sprout were already aware, but the rest of the staff were looking at the two empty chairs curiously.   Dumbledore didn't keep the students in suspense, he looked over at each of the tables, a grave expression on his face, and started speaking.

"Before you settle down to enjoy one of our wonderful meals, I fear that I have to dispense some very distressing news."   The hall burst out in whispers, wondering what had happened.  Dumbledore gestured for silence and continued.  "Professor Snape was killed this afternoon."  

The Hall exploded in noise, and Harry found it interesting that several of the girls in Slytherin actually seemed pleased with the news.  Of course, Draco looked like somebody kicked him in the Kneazle, but whaah!   The noise was so loud that Hagrid of all people had to pound on the table to get people's attention.  Once the Hall was relatively quiet again, the Headmaster said, 

"Professor Snape was working on developing a potion that I had discovered in a reference, however, the properties of the potion were so dangerous he chose to perform the experiment away from the confines of the school.  I'm not certain what actually happened, I was alerted by the wards at his location that there was an explosion, and just as I arrived, I saw him be engulfed in flames.  Even my strongest spells weren't enough to reach him, and by the time the blaze burned itself out, all that was left was ashes of the building.    I ask you to join me in a moment of silence for a man who was a dedicated Potions Master and a valuable member of the Hogwarts Family.”

At the glares from McGonagall, Flitwick, and Sprout, all of the tables managed to at least attempt a moment of silence, even though Harry could see that there were quite a few people who looked like they wanted to start dancing on the tables, and not just at the Gryffindor table!    He wondered how the Professor would be able to fake the scene of the fire, but Harry was sure that the man would be able to make it believable, especially with the Aurors distracted by all the other deaths this afternoon. 

As the rest of the school was absorbing the news, Padma turned to him and said, “Parvati made a comment to me this afternoon about your Godfather Harry, and said that I should ask you about it.  Do you mind?”

Harry grimaced, "No, not really.   But I have to warn you that some of what I'm going to say is going to be painful, especially for you, Cho, so brace yourself, okay?"   When all the girls nodded, he started telling the true story of Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew, and, when he got to the part about Pettigrew casting the curse that killed Cedric, Harry reached out and pulled Cho into a hug, letting her cling to him as she cried.  Su, Luna, and Padma moved closer, trying to provide comfort for the girl, although he was impressed to see that Padma had cast a privacy spell around them so that nobody noticed Cho's tears. 

When Cho stopped crying, she looked up with a smile, and whispered: "Thanks, you're right, it was painful, but at least I know the truth now." 

She actually did seem happier, or at least, less down for the rest of the meal, and Luna smiled softly at him, saying "You seem to have a knack for comforting upset girls, Harry?  Is there any way I can convince you to be my stuffed dragon?  I had to leave Elliot at home when I came to school, and I really miss him." 

Harry grinned, “I think Professor Flitwick would probably object, and if not him than your roommates at least,”

Luna shrugged, “My roommates ignore me anyway, so that won't be a problem, and I'll just tell Professor Flitwick that I don't feel safe in the Aerie without you there.”

He looked at her seriously, “Are you really that concerned Luna?  I know that it had to be a horrible experience, but Marietta's gone, and even if she is acquitted by the Wizengamot, Professor Dumbledore won't let her back in the school.  Plus, remember that we talked about training this afternoon?”

Luna looked away, but nodded, "In my head, I know what you are saying is right, Harry, but my head isn't in charge right now!" 

Padma spoke up, “Luna?  You know that we get individual rooms when we start our OWLs, would you like me to talk to Professor Flitwick about moving into my room?”  The Indian girl grinned at Luna conspiratorially, “I won't complain about your stuffed dragon, as long as you're willing to share!”

Luna looked interested, while Cho nearly choked on her drink, before turning to Harry.  “What is it with you, Harry?  Do you always get girls throwing their knickers at you?" 

Harry shrugged, “Not until recently, no I don't.  But, I'm not going to even try to pretend I'm unhappy about it.  All I will do is treat the girls properly and do my best not to hurt them.”

Cho looked at him, obviously not expecting a serious answer, but she nodded, “Can't be much fairer than that I guess.  You really are a decent guy, aren't you?”

“I've always tried to be, but I'm a guy, I'm going to screw up at some point.  I just have to make sure I try to fix whatever it is I've done.”

Luna spoke up, “Before this conversation gets any more serious, yes Padma, I'd really appreciate it if you spoke to Professor Flitwick.  You don't have to mention my stuffed dragon though, he probably wouldn't understand.”

Padma snorted at the slight grin on the younger girl's face, and, wiping her face with a napkin, got up from the table and approached the Ravenclaw Head of House.    They watched as she spoke to the man, and when he nodded, she turned and gave them a thumbs up signal.    

Luna smiled at Padma when the girl came back to the table, but then the smile dropped.  “Oh, Poo!  I was planning on doing something new after dinner, but now I'll have to spend that time packing up my belongings and moving to your room.  Darn it!”

Padma shook her head, “No you won't, Luna, Professor Flitwick is going to have the elves gather up everything of yours and bring it, and your trunk up to our room.  If you are planning on doing what I think you are, you'll have Su and me for company. We were talking about it before everything went crazy this afternoon.”

Harry raised an eyebrow, as did Cho since they both heard Luna obliquely mention the Glory Holes, and Harry wondered if she would appreciate it if he were her first customer? 

Cho said, "After all the excitement of the afternoon, I think I would enjoy trying something different myself, you don't mind if I join you, do you, Luna?" 

Luna smiled, “No, I think it would make things even more fun to have new friends there with me.”

Harry just shook his head, smiling, even though Padma and Cho looked at him speculatively.  He could tell they were wondering if he was going to be spending any more of his galleons, and honestly, he was seriously considering it.   With Pettigrew captured, Voldemort helpless, and Snape dead, he really felt like celebrating, damn it!

When they finished eating, Luna and the others headed back to Aerie, and Harry walked over to the Gryffindor table, where he was amused to see that Parvati was still looking a bit out of it, and Hermione and Lavender were looking a little envious about her condition.  Although he did wonder why Hermione was sitting so gingerly on the bench?

Just as he was about to sit down, he noticed Ron looking at him, and then his friend started heading for the door.  Curious, he turned to follow Ron out of the hall.   When he stepped into the entryway, Ron was standing a few feet away, his hands in his pockets.  

“What's up Ron?”

His friend looked a little embarrassed, but he said, “Look, sorry to ask, but the twins are off with the girls right now or I'd ask them, but, do you have seven galleons?  I'll pay you back when I can, I promise.”

Harry just gave him a knowing grin, “You know, it's customary to give the girl a tip at the end, don't you?   Tell you what, I'll give you ten galleons, that way you can put the extra in the slot when she's done.”

Ron looked surprised, but grinned happily, “Didn't know that mate, but thanks!  Do we need to go up to the tower, or?”

He laughed, “No, I've still got my pouch on me, let's step out of the entryway though, don't want people wondering what's going on.”  He smirked, “I'm thinking about the same thing, we do have a reason to celebrate, don't we?”

Ron chuckled, “Yeah, we do.  Although Malfoy isn't very happy, is he?”

Harry snorted, “And we care about Malfoy's happiness, why?”

Ron looked startled, then laughed, shaking his head.   Harry just moved toward the exit from the school and stepped into the shadows, pulling out his money pouch.   Counting out the ten galleons, he handed them to Ron and clapped him on the back as the gangly redhead thanked him and hurried away.

Once his friend was out of sight, Harry moved to the stairs heading for the third-floor corridor.  He had quite a few galleons left in his pouch, and Luna deserved as much pleasure as he could provide.

Then her eyes cleared and she looked directly at Cho and said something, but Ginny couldn't hear what it was, because there was a clank of galleons through the slot, and she looked up to see who it was.  Recognizing Ron's face, she smirked, “Well, this should be interesting,” before moving forward and taking him in her mouth.

Amelia leaned back in her chair, rubbing her eyes and wondering if this day would ever end?   Looking up tiredly, she turned to the man sitting across from her, “Okay Rufus, what do we know for certain?”

"Around 3 o'clock this afternoon, a massive fire was detected at the Nott Manor.  It totally overwhelmed the fire suppression wards that were in place and was completely out of control.  At least three of the Ministry Response Team reported seeing the shapes of animals in the flames.  You know what that means." 

Amelia swore, “Fiendfyre!  That means it was deliberately started, and it's going to be a stone bitch finding out just who died there.”

Her second in command shrugged, “Maybe not, we've received notice from Gringotts of a number of major vault holders suddenly dying this afternoon.  I have to warn you, you aren't going to like some of the names.”

She gave him a sour look, “I haven't liked much of anything I've learned today, what's a bit more of a headache?”

Rufus Scrimgeour smiled sympathetically "The first name was Cornelius Fudge."  He waited while Amelia stopped cursing and continued, "Lucius Malfoy, Artus Mulciber, Corbin Yaxley, Amycus Carrow, and his sister Alecto.  I think you get the idea, this was a meeting of 'imperioused' Death Eaters, and several of them were identified by the Potter boy at the end of the tournament last June. And that's not to mention people like McNair, and Crabbe.   It's a hell of a mess, and I really don't envy you having to deal with it." 

She snorted, “Any more good news for me?  Like maybe the Goblins decided this would be a good afternoon for a rebellion, or maybe Salazar Slytherin decided to return from the grave and attack the Royal Family?”

He chuckled, “No, but you might actually like this.  Undersecretary Umbridge showed up, trying to interfere, and she pissed Shacklebolt off enough that she's in a holding cell, awaiting interrogation, and, because she's not a Pureblood, we can use veratiserum on her!”

Amelia stared at him in disbelief for a few seconds, before she started smiling.  It has to be said that it was not a pleasant smile, but she didn't really care.  That toad had been a pain in her arse ever since she'd joined the Ministry working for old Barty Crouch.  “I want that bitch leaking veratiserum from every pore, keep her until we've wrung ever secret she ever heard out of her.  And then we charge her with everything in the books from A to Z!”

“Gladly, boss!” he grinned, but then the smile dropped and he said, “If what I'm hearing is correct about her connections to Malfoy and a few others, I think she's going to be confessing to things that we may not want to have revealed in open court.”

Amelia closed her eyes and sighed, “Are you telling me that you expect the woman to be overcome by remorse for her crimes and hang herself in her cell tonight?”  She shook her head, grimacing, “It wouldn't be the first time, would it?  Just make sure you get everything before she climbs the chair, okay?”

He nodded before getting out of the chair and leaving her alone with her thoughts.  Once the door closed behind him, Amelia cast a locking spell at the door and reached into her desk, pulling out a dark glass bottle and a glass.   Opening the bottle, she poured three fingers into the glass and tossed it back, flames shooting out of her mouth after she swallowed.   Closing the bottle, she put it and the glass away, before bolting from her chair and rushing into her private bathroom, just barely reaching the toilet before she was noisily sick.

Padma gaped at her, "Are you sure Luna?  You don't have to do this just because you think you owe us, Su and I had already noticed how Edgecombe was behaving and we're going to be keeping an eye on her to prevent things like that happening." 

Luna shook her head, “I'm pretty sure it's because I want to, Padma, I'd been thinking about it even before today happened, but never could get up the courage to approach you, but, after everything that happened, I think I'd like to be with you tonight.”

Padma smiled softly, she wasn't going to turn the girl down, not as fragile as she still was in places, so she pulled the nightgown over her head and held out her arms, holding the girl tight before leaning down and kissing her softly.
