Aw I’m glad you noticed the little texture! It’s my fav part of the drawing process haha 🥰 I use Photoshop, and Kyle T Webster’s dry media pack is a godsend 🤲✨ To get the texture, I first color everything in with flat colors. Then I use a soft pastel brush on a layer mask to veeery lightly erase my work. This gives my drawings that gritty paper texture, and also let’s you see whatever color is beneath the drawing. To finish the texturing, I create another layer underneath my drawing to add more color. I usually fill it with a lighter or more saturated version of my original flat colors so that they can poke through the parts that I had erased. All together, the layers give off that bumpy, papery look! I hope my explanation wasn’t too confusing though 😅

Ooh that is a long story, with a lot of luck involved haha! ✨ I attended art college from 2016 - 19, and for the majority of the program, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do after graduation. It wasn’t until the last semester did one of my professors suggest I do children’s book illustration. I joined SCBWI and met with a local critique group — it all just felt so right sharing work and talking with people in that community! After graduation, I got a day job and freelanced on the side as a kid lit artist on Fiverr. My prices were absurdly low, but it gave me lots of experience ✨ One of my Fiverr clients wanted to take his book to a self publishing house, so he introduced me to the publisher. The publisher then asked to see my portfolio, and wanted to hire me as an in-house artist 🤩✨ I’ve been with the self publishing house since 2020, and have made (I think) over a dozen books with them. Recently though, a literary agent found me on Instagram via my OC work, and asked if I wanted to be represented by her agency. Thanks to that, I’ve been able to work with bigger publishing houses to create bigger books (and with a bigger budget lol) It’s really been a long journey, but I’m super grateful that the stars seemed to align for all these things to happen! 🥰💗

How did you get into illustrating children's books?

How do you use textures and where do you get them for your digital art? I noticed the paper overlay in a lot of your work :]
