This was the gig I did on moving weekend. Tulsa is 4-5 hours away from Dallas. Not a far drive but not a quickie when there are plenty of other things on the agenda.
I can be honest with you guys. I knew I was doing an improvisational burlesque show. I listened over the potential songs at least twice each and knew a lot of them. I had no idea we were improvising with a live band. (The band was way better than I expected them to be.) We all did a planned act to prerecorded music in the first set, then spun the wheel for the song for the second set.
I dressed in a fancy gown with a panel skirt and corset beneath, two pairs of gloves and a pair of gauntlets on my hands so I had plenty to strip. Each time someone got a song, they replaced that song on the wheel with another song from the list.
I spun the wheel and got "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder! I hit the damn jackpot because I love that song.
I was obviously pleased with myself. The gesture and face say it all.
The information about the live band might have been in the initial booking email but I didn't take note of it. The surprise wasn't worth being angry about because I was already there and ready to roll with whatever came my way.
That's my takeaway. Sometimes it's not worth being pissed about something unexpected. Besides, I obviously had fun and made that song my bitch.
