Toei (the animation studio) made it as filler, and for non-manga readers it adds WAY too much confusion for the story later on. So for Oda’s sake, please pretend that the contents of flashback never happened, it’s the only way to understand the rest of the arc.

For Japanese speakers, it was easy to recognize that Den was probably Tom’s brother even though they hadn’t given us any information about him yet, because they sounded so much alike, even if they didn’t look remotely similar.
