VS is also a drama with some historical characters and events that did take place in our historical time line. Take Leif Erikson, he was a real person IRL and did discover North America like depicted in the anime.

It's more like there's some source speaking of it, but it's not clear whether it was a few exceptional cases or not. Fascinating though and definitely a cool choice for the series!
