Case in point Mustang has heard of her from Ed but when May heals Riza in the underground this is the first time they are meeting. He was just some guy and a dying lady in the creepy sewers to her.

He has been laying awake at night alone for yYEARS unable to sleep, unable to eat, unable to feel the warmth of human touch...and yet, he SPRINTED back to fight! Al is amazing. It's a shame the original FMA "03'" isn't readily available for ppl, because if you saw the OG first, this moment in brotherhood would have hit even harder. Brotherhood is obviously incredible, but its focus is wide on the ensemble cast, but in 03' it focused a lot more and Ed and Al,and their long journey to get their bodies back. I'm sure it's been said a zillion times, but definitely watch 03' at some point, you won't regret it - even in just your own off camera time. As anime fans we're insanely lucky to have 2 versions of the world of FMA.

He made the choice that was right for him, in that moment, but without the information from the outside, and perhaps not realizing his return would make the sacrifices a full set. Overall the "wrong" choice. But nobody can blame him for it, and it's fantastic for the drama and showing his character!
