When Joel's dad told him he hoped he did a little better than him it hit me pretty hard. When Joel said it to Ellie, it gutted me. Full-on sobbing. I grew up with a pretty abusive father. He'd never have sat down with me like Joel's dad did. He'd never have made himself vulnerable like that. Ever. He'd never have wished that for me. So even though Joel's dad wasn't great, I could empathize. I have kids of my own now. Two are grown, the other two are elementary age. I know I'm doing better than my dad, but there have been a lot of things I messed up. With my oldest two more than the youngest. And I really hope that someday they're a little bit better than me.
