But there are entire gay/queer districts fo nightlife in big cities like Osaka and Tokyo where the undergorund cross dressing scene flourished and people, in a very strict conservative country like japan, could feel free to themselves. A quick and painless transition would have been the miricicle to a lot of people back then.
