Oda genuinely has a powerful passion for writing the story and he gets great satisfaction out of writing it. The only thing that makes it a chore for him are the deadlines, but he also understands the utility of these deadlines, and he understands that it leads to many good things for the fans of his series which he also has genuine care for. It also facilitates that he continues to write his story for a living, which is something he places high value on not only because he loves writing One Piece, but once upon a time he was VERY determined to never have a "Real" job (his characterization of it, not mine). You can read more about his past if you're interested, but the man went through hell working harder than pretty much anyone to try and write manga for a living. That means he has a deep appreciation for what One Piece has given him. I've read a lot about Oda a few years back because when I first discovered how GOOD this story was, I couldn't believe it. It actually broadened my imagination of what a story means and could be. I wanted to know what kind of person writes a story like that, Turns out it takes an intelligent, passionate person with the right set of skills and a crazy high work ethic and sense of duty to do it. Actually on a sidenote, I think a reason Oda writes characters that have a powerful sense of duty is because it's the ideal he probably envisions. I think he has tried (and for the most part succeeded) to emulate that sense of duty in his own life. He's honestly a remarkable person and deserves the glaze he gets.

There's even a scene in the live-action that was redone after being "ready" just to include a reference to some new information that had just been revealed at that week's one piece chapter. Also makes me wonder how many other possible references there could be to things that are yet to be revealed. I wonder if Oda would instruct the LA team to also add references to things that for now only he himself knows. Can you imagine reading an one piece chapter a couple years from now and getting some new reveal that never got a chance to be canonically hinted early on, only to then realize that the LA DID hint at it and nobody thought much of it?

Most shonen has their MC start as an underdog, Naruto, DBZ, MHA, etc. They are usually either weak/bullied/small/unsignificant, and gradually grow and get stronger/discover they have latent powers. Luffy steps into this story relaxed in his confidence, being strong is 2nd nature to him, as is the idea that he will be the pirate king. While other MCs go through deep character progression to reach a philosophical evolution, (DBZ, AoT, Naruto, etc) Luffy starts out fully evolved philosophically. Luffy knows his philosophical and moral take on almost any situation, and its not due to personal experience, wisdom, struggle or anything like that, its pure instinct, he just knows, and he does not doubt it. Luffy is more of a force of nature than a traditional protagonist. It is incredibly refreshing for any story, and especially for a shonen anime.

2025-03-12 16:20:40 +0000 UTCFor me it's the only show that I just can't pick a favorite. With very few exceptions every character is so good in their own ways. Take the victim association from this episode for example, Lola is cool and unique, the two guys who witnessed Zoro are cool and unique (as a pair), the old man with injuries is also cool and unique. All thanks to Oda's first editor, who hammered into him the ability to write characters like this. I can't imagine how much work Oda goes through just writing background stuff for the characters - just so he can use it as guideline for how those characters would act.

Brook’s story is often overlooked because of how chaotic this arc is (in the best way possible, of course). But the relief that not only Laboon is alive but that there is someone from the time Brook was “alive” still around to remember him and his previous crew. And for Brook to have been wandering for decades alone, here he finds a captain that has been waiting for him since the beginning of the story (his priority had been a musician and a cook 😂), a captain that has a similar joyful way-of-life as Yorkie had. The way Oda writes it all as a circle, even though you see it coming, it just gets you every time 🥹
