I've seen other reactors completely quit the series so hopefully you two will ride through it. Whether you read the manga, or watch the older version of the anime, or watched brotherhood, this chapter/episode scars viewers, and as someone who's seen this from the older anime years ago, it still stings when I watch it.

2025-02-19 05:47:10 +0000 UTCi read the manga of Full Metal Alchemist before even watching any of the 2 animes ... i was like 14-15 same age as Ed and Al ... and when i read this chapter like everyone i was so shocked and feel sick to my stomach, even considering to drop it and quit reading the rest of it ... but i had to recognize if this anime went this deep and serious this early on ... how will the rest of the story unfold? so i keep reading, and till this day at my 30's it became by favourite anime of all time ... One Piece is competing against it ... but since OP has not finished yet its still a close race xD

Shou Tocker ended up at #1 by a huge margin ... the national poll also included best anime dad, and Huges won that as well :) so Full Metal alchemist had both best and worst dads in anime xD

Edit for context: Hiromu Arakawa would draw pictures of characters ascending to heaven when they died in "In Memoriam" segments. She drew Shou Tucker burning in Hell as Nina and Alexander flew up into the clouds.

2025-02-18 22:39:15 +0000 UTCI remember when this episode came out, hearing the chimera trying to talk like the girl, its remnant half expressed memories, the hairs on its back and void in its eyes, the contrast between the joy earlier from both individualities and the sadness and pain it's expressing now, and the fact you learned earlier that the chimera made from his wife begged to be killed... it was SO wrong that I felt sick, I had to make a pause and go outside touch some grass lol Later all anime forums were talking about this, it shocked a whole generation. Even now when someone uses the "Ed...ward" meme gif you always get someone saying "too far dude" xD

2025-02-18 17:22:45 +0000 UTCI was dreading the reaction to this episode too. Honestly, my reaction to this was just, man, i remember I stopped watching for a time. When this episode came out it was quite SHOCKING in the anime community, we were all effed up. While there was a lot of effed up stuff in anime already - this came completely unexpected. They did a great job honestly building up Nina. Probably one of the most memorable episodes in anime history. Fmab came out a while ago, so there's been a lot since there, but you have to keep in mind that it sort of set the bar for what was to come (like OP, Bleach, Naruto), and at that time this was really, really shocking. An adorable little girl, especially at that time was sort of a trope, to add some light heartedness to an anime - so to actually go in this direction...ouff

Like, the villains/bad guys always have at least some fans (hell, I once found a person on tiktok whose favorite character of all time is Spandam), but literally EVERYONE agrees that Shou Tucker deserves the worst.

Personally, this part of the story hit me harder in the original, 2003, anime as I believe it was 2 episodes, so we got to know Nina better, so it had more emotional weight behind it when it happened. I will say, that Brotherhood does a better job with emotional whiplash due to the suddenness of the events, but people will prefer different methods. Either way, massive EMOTIONAL DAMAGE 😭😭😭
