yeah I agree, I was pretty 50-50 on it. But now after watching two episodes I wish they picked dub. Mainly just cuz I like the translation of the dub better. I guess my preferred version would be subtitles that match the English audio but with the Japanese voices in the background.

I don't remember when I first watch FMA but seeing their "mother" that way again gave me the same exact chills. I'm excited to watch this all over again because I honestly forgot a bit of it.

This episode is still as amazing as I remember, it's so dark. The idea of "resurrecting human with science" always gave me an eerie, no-good feeling, but these kids just want to see their mother again. And the fact that their mom died naturally bcs of pandemic (not something like being killed thus make them want a revenge) makes it more "tragic" in a way. Also here she is, the lieutenant, Riza Hawkeye! She's my fave character, I missed her so much.

How about just let the story play out and learn as intended without trying to spoil yourself (and them) with speculation.

Since I'm watching this for the first time with you guys, (or more or less, since I did watch about half of Fullmetal Alchemist a LONG time ago) I feel like I can sort of post my thoughts in the comment section, to speculate along with you.
I don't think their father left books talking about Human Transmutation for them to find. I think he just left books about normal alchemy that they read and learned from. Through those books they probably learned about the taboo of human transmutation, but not how to do it.
In that same vein, I don't think their teacher taught them how to do human transmutation either. Just how to do normal alchemy, better than they could learn just through reading books.
Finally, it seems to me that human transmutation is more or less the same as any other transmutation. I.E. you need the right ingredients for the transmutation, and the transmutation circle needs to have the correct formula contained within it.
What I'm trying to get at is that I don't think anybody needed to teach them how to do human transmutation because everything you'd need to know to do it can be inferred and studied just by doing regular alchemy. It went wrong because they failed to properly take into consideration "Equivalent Exchange". I'm not sure how much more I can say beyond that.

Anyone watching Full Metal Alchemist (either 2003 or Brotherhood) for the first time: Oh, what a cute scene. These children are so precious and funny...OH MY GOD! WHAT JUST HAPPENED!
Yup, episode went from wholesome flashback to wtf just happened and info overload in a flash. Such a strong will that Ed has to be able to go forward from that horrific scene

Ed id 15 and Al is 14. This is typical age for Shonen protags (Luffy is 17 after all). I'm so excited that you two started this journey. Be warned it can get heavy, but like One Piece it has it's sad moments and happy moments. And don't worry, we will see Winry again.

Hiromu Arakawa (the manga author) is amazingly good at portraying interpersonal relationships. How she can go from 3 playful children to tramatised and broken state and you feel it and its believable. All the small details and non verbal communication. It is so masterfully done!

Great reaction, i was dreading this episode. Honestly because of how many twists and turns there are, can't really say much except, of course, I look forward to the reactions!

Even though I think the dub is very good, I always prefer things in their authentic original form. You prefer dub, I prefer sub, we voted and sub won. This is only the 2nd upload and these comments are already all over. Let's respect their decision and move on.

I guess it varies, huh? I watched it in Japanese first, then tried the English dub for a couple of episodes on a rewatch, having heard good things about it and thinking it would be convenient going forward... but I simply didn't like it as much as the original Japanese. Like, I thought it was good, but just not quite to the same standard.
With all those discussions, and the poll, and H&K having made their decision, I guess I thought that would be the end of it. Hopefully people will stop complaining about the sub soon, because it's already getting tiresome.

Great reaction! I think Edward is 15/16 at this point in the series, while Alphonse is a year younger than him. Also, it's Winry (not Winfrey) 😅

This is one of the rare few anime I prefer the dub over the sub on… kinda sad I missed the poll but I’ve never watched the sub all the way through before so it’s like a new experience. Can’t wait to watch my favorite anime again with y’all!

As a non nativ English speaker i find the Japanese dub a little better. But not by a far margin. The FMA B English dub is one of the, if not the best english dub of a Japanese Anime i heard. I would say the difference would be 0.1 to 0.2 Points on the 0 to 10 scale. I still find that there is a little bit more emotion in the japanese one. But i can understand the sentiment.

Alchemists in the series can essentially transmute anything they know the chemical structure of, as you guessed. While they can’t create metal swords from trees, they can extract iron or minerals from the earth.
However, State Alchemists have their own specialties, as they need to perform transmutations as fast as possible during battles. They must always have their transmutation circles ready, for instance, Roy’s fire transmutation circle is permanently attached to his glove, eliminating the need for constant drawing. This is why Hawkeye carries a briefcase full of backup gloves in the first episode. You’ll also encounter other alchemists with their transmutation circles, such as Armstrong, whose circle is on his gauntlet (you’ve already seen him in episode 1).

Man, I had forgotten how much more I love the dub for this show, it's painful at times not hearing the specific expressions and lines.
Not a case of "you like how you heard it first" either. First time I watched this was in Japanese when it was airing. But the dub was truly a rare one which elevated the show for me. The bloopers were a nice cherry on top.
Oh well. This is too much to watch full length with the difference, will watch the edited ones. Enjoy.
