One Piece volumes have an art section called the Usopp Gallery. It has been there since the early beginning. Fans also used to send questions along eith their art which I'm presuming gave birth to sbs as a separate section. Currently readers can submit their sbs questions addressed for the usopp Gallery section. Odds of it getting picked up are low. Oda's vibes basically

Adil

what's the name of background music - that track is so groovy!

RunningManNewbie

So One Piece has been being published mostly weekly in a larger magazine, chapter by chapter. Because it's a weekly journal, readers could mail in to the publisher, who would pass it on to Oda, and he basically used a page to answer some questions. I don't know if they gave him an extra page, or if he budgeted for it

Mythrial

If you wanna know more about the REAL Caribbean pirate's I'd hight recommend y'all watch the tv show Black Sails. That's what it's about.

Kelby Farley

Quick note - the Chinese syllable "qi" is like saying "chi" but forming your mouth as if you were going to say "tea".

Jonathan Charles

I agree

Ace Mbodji

Speaking of other Mangaka doing stuff like this Gege Akutami has alot of hilarious self deprecating stuff in his. He had a physicist try to explain how Gojo's Limitless works and iirc had multiple logical flaws pointed out. As a mild explanation between every chapter there are typically a few "pages" of non chapter material. This ranges from Title pages, cover art, character summaries, and silly alternate stuff of which oda's sbs segments are apart of. I'm not sure how prevalent Sbs segments are in the greater manga sphere because i dont own many titles personally.

Rav

Haylo asked about how the SBS started and for us to let them know but since it's explained in the very first SBS in volume 4 I figured it would probably be better if you added that to the sbs questions for a video reaction.

Jake from SF

only one piece have SBS and cover sotory and usop galery

Jomblopedia

I wouldn’t be surprised if people carried more than one pistol during that era (maybe 2-3). After all, those old pistols could only hold one shot, and reloading them was a time-consuming process due to the gunpowder and other components. However, carrying six pistols?, maybe the legend surrounding it likely grew over time 🏴‍☠️

Fajar Kurniawan

Don't worry girls. Real Blackbeard's ghost should not haunt you at all xD

Wojciechu

Love the connections to BlackBeard in real life. By far one of the coolest pirates of all time! Look up his dying quote! It's pretty epic!!!

Iron Lord Rock

I wouldn’t personally describe Logia types as “nature”, I feel “elemental” is a more appropriate description for the category. Given that we’ve see powers over: fire, sand, smoke, lightning, darkness, etc. Also, I like to define Paramecias as “Miscellaneous” fruit. Because so long as it doesn’t transform you into an animal or give you the power to control and turn into an element, it’s a Paramecia.

Thank You Oriem-Sensei <3

The official translation certainly isn't infallible, and *should* sometimes be questioned, but IMO they're generally more likely to be correct, especially in the latter half of the series. Also, Zoro/Zolo wasn't a translation decision, it was (infamously) a localisation choice.

Karri Spencer

All those questions on the preferences of the crew make them feel so real!

Lucia Petrozzi

I love fan questions. I know JRR Tolkien hated them lol. I heard him talking about how he used to get phone calls from stoned American kids at ridiculous hours of the night, because he was in England, of course, asking questions like, does the Balrog have wings? He was a University professor so it was easy to get his contact details. Thank goodness Japanese fans are more polite than that or we'd never have got over a thousand episodes! The questions are really funny sometimes and I love Oda's sense of humour in answering them. You can see the sense of humour that created One Piece all over his answers. I'm going to see if I can find a television interview with him on YT.

I think it's actually relatively common for mangas that are serialized in magazines to have a fan question corner. At least it used to be (cause I defently remember similar stuff like the SBS corner in other older shonen)

Brief Cover Story Update: For everyone who’s been asking about the cover stories, I’ve decided on a way to incorporate them. They will start very soon;) beginning with Cover Story #3, as the anime adapted the first two. Additionally, starting next week, there will be a change to the usual SBS schedule. The details will become clear in time. Thank you for your patience! 💙

Oriem

I can't wait for them to get further in, there's so many real world references. I know a few one piece youtubers that have made videos compiling all the characters based on real life historical/current. Maybe once they get caught up they could react to it?

Ben Asay

For some cover stories, they can just react to them at the end/start of specific arcs. eg. reacting to the Enel cover story after the end of Skypea.

Marco St

Assassin's Creed Black Flag, the game, has my favorite depiction of Blackbeard. It's both accurate and entirely fictional, based on all the legends and stories surrounding the man. He also has such a raw heartbreaking speech towards the end of the game. (You can watch it one YouTube.) The most feared pirate in history was a woman. She was a Chinese pirate that had a massive fleet. (I've heard her refered to as the "Queen of Pirates")

Kato

thanks ! i know what i'll watch afterward, seems pretty cool !

Boost Vr

i don't know if you would ever consider this since you're mostly an anime/tv-show channel, but if you'd be interested to dive more into the carribean pirates and Blackbeard, there's an amazing feature-length, based on a true story animation video from the channel Incognito Mode (run by Internet Historian, if that rings a bell) called "The Gentleman Pirate" that covers the story of Stede Bonnet, who also happened to run into Blackbeard. it's quite a.. unique.. animation style, but it is super entertaining, while also educational and just great watch in general. Would be stoked if you'd consider a reaction

Kodakan

Fun fact: facts are fun

MeteorJuice

More fun pirate facts: Gold Roger telling people to find his treasure at his execution is based on the 17th century french pirate Olivier Levasseur who threw a cipher into the crowd when he was about to be executed and told people to find his treasure ( still hasnt been found and cipher hasnt been decoded to this day). Also one of the most successful pirates in history was a woman: The pirate empress Zheng Yi Sao who commanded a pirate armada. She's done way too much to list here but her story is really interesting to google

aydin sofian

Ah yes, the 'official' One Piece translation is truly what we should all go by. Why, they would never continue to use the name 'Zolo' for any character in the manga! Truly a bastion of perfection that should never be questioned!

Franky H

Yeah, Oda loves taking inspiration from real life, both past and the ever-changing present

Ilsuk Yang

As far as I know, paramecia is a common mistranslation of paramythia. Paramythia means something like "adjacent to myth" which is obviously very fitting. Paramecia is a microscopic organism that lives in stagnant water. I don't think that's what Oda was going for. Because of syllable issues, they sound and are written identical in the borrowed english that japanese uses, but I think translators could perhaps use their heads on some issues lol.

Flubbedsquid

These are so fun!

wanira 11

These sbs are great for me as I only watch the anime so miss out on these exerts from tha manga, so thanks 👍

Notorious DKL

I've suggested on discord already, but there's a great action show about pirates out there named Black Sails. It mixes characters based on pirates from real-life (like Blackbeard, Calico Jack, Charles Vane) and from the Treasure island book (like Long John Silver and Billy Bones).

Hudell

So in Japan Manga chapters get published on multiple Magazines, the Shonen Jump is the one were One Piece gets published, and the magazine has the postal address where people can write them, multiple manga authors like to use these to make popularity polls of their characters!! and they publish them from time to time, there has been multiple popularity pools for one piece as well, the most recent one was made like 2-3 years ago, and they made an special website so people from all over the world were able to vote!

Azael Santacruz

Speaking of the CP9 agents... Kumadori mentions his mother "being in heaven" but she is actually doing fine. She's an assassin like him, and the first doodle we've gotten of her is her doing the peace sign.

Jackie Wilson

Yes, "paramecia" was the popular fan-translation of "paramythia" for a long time before an official One Piece translation was easily available. Unfortunately, most of the community still use the former despite the incredibly shaky logic behind it. Personally, I think paramythia is a *much* better fit... it's ancient greek for "fairy tale", which seems appropriate for weird magic powers you'd find in folktales, myths, legends and children's stories. I hope you stick with paramythia going forward!

Karri Spencer

Oda really expands the world outside of the main story with SBS's. It just makes every character more living and relatable.

Fold

Its very common for fans to send letters to shounen jump (the magazine in which OP is published) asking questions. Oda probably got so many that he couldnt ignore the pile!

Alexander Tonkins

SBS are cool, it would be also cool if you two read the cover stories after finishing the next arc.

Monkey D. Lucci

Blackbeard/Edward Teach is one of the most famous pirates and so the name Blackbeard was often used in fictional stories. There is even a legend about his death. And no, this won't tell anything about the One Piece character, so no spoiler ahead. After he got defeated he was decapitated, his head was taken while his body was thrown in the water. But before sinking to the ground of the sea, his headless body did swim around the ship for a few times. It shows how feared he was, that there is such a devilish legend about him.

MotU_Shosha

SBS started by the publisher of OP manga. Basically everyone can send questions (or fanmail in general) via postcard and send it to the publisher's office and the staff/editors will bring it to Oda and he'd choose the question to answer. Iirc, he still have all the postcards, he even have a special room to store the postcards (since it was A LOT, it has been 20+ years!). Anyway, overseas fans can send it too! Though you have to write it in Japanese.

Zee

Great thing to pack with special occasions, like the movies, or maybe even some recipes from Sanji's cookbook!

Tomas

Cant wait for you guys to get to the SBS about what Zoro hates coz then you ll get whole new specific of live action beginning episodes... the anime parts and manga parts too ^^

Daiyiya

Right. But nah, that man never change. He is taking a longer break now. Only to get busy with other things. Live action, his OP museum, anime and etc.

Muhammad Sulaiman Sunar

I see. Thanks friend

Jonas do Prado

The real life Blackbeard actually made a point to make himself so flashy and crazy, it was to make a name for himself, to intimedate anyone who would see his Jolly Roger and make then surrender without a fight.

emilio corvalan

That's how it was over a decade ago, he has talked about changing his habits and working a relative normal schedule gor a weekly manga artist and now takes every 3th week off plus 2024 there was a lot of time off more than that allotted amount

CraigoD96

They are planning to and have them, they just don't know how to incorporate them rn

Snowman9712

Oda also draw many characters based on real life person, like admiral aokiji based on 70s japanese actor yusaku matsuda. I don't recommend you to search it for now though, too many spoilers linked to this actors name

Anton Ny

Do you have any plans to reacting to some manga cover stories? The anime adapted the first two (Little Buggy and Coby and Helmeppo training) and they later became relevant (and some that you haven't seen also became relevant already)

Jonas do Prado

You guys really need to watch the 4 season (38 episode show (prequel to treasure island) Black Sails its a masterpiece

CraigoD96

Just so you know. The question about Blackbeard, Whitebeard are based on real life pirate. It shows that Oda really like to read, study so many historical, fantasy book. FYI, Oda only spend 3 hours every day to sleep. 3 hours out of 24. And he often sleep at his Studio. Very rare at his home. One Piece really is his life.

Muhammad Sulaiman Sunar

Recommendation to learn on real life Pirates in the Caribbean in the 18th Century: The Lost Pirate Kingdom on Netflix

Seb_L._Wol

I love sbs because as the show progresses there will be instances where sbs exclusive info is already integrated in it and they don't explain it there so keeping up with sbs's really enriches the experience

Degenerick

oda channeling roger there haha, if you want blackbeards treasure, "now's your chance!"

tired
