They mention that magic is a world of visualization/imagination, Flamme and Serie can't visualize/imagine themselves in a peaceful world, therefor they'd be unable or rather unsuitable to defeat the Demon King as their magic would probably be nowhere near as effective as it usually is. I can see Serie not wanting to straight up for that reason, but I think Flamme genuinly is just like "Power-wise I could probably beat him, but I can't imagine the world after, so I can't"

Linus Marjeta

I think what Flamme meant by her saying that herself and Serie wouldn't defeat the demon king is that they didn't want to because if they did then there would be a lot less demons for them to fight with him gone. And that Frieren would be the one to do it because she's a mage of a peaceful age, that she would enjoy peace once she defeated the demon king because there would be less demons around once he's defeated. I also have a bad feeling about Serie. To me it seems like her presance is connected with strife and conflict. She bestows any spell to a power hungry mage that attains first class, and she had no desire to defeat the demon king even though I'm guessing she probably could have. And the way she's compared to the Goddess is ominous, like she's usurping the deity and turned herself into a god in the eyes of society.

"To provoke mage-on-mage violence" Ubel: "Bet!" Thank you for another fun reaction! I look forward to your reaction to the second exam.

Carl Rigney

Nice episode. But I wanted to ask something that has nothing to do with Frieren. Have you thought about making a reaction to the cinematics of League of Legends? They're gorgeous and I'm sure you'll like them.

Dariello

they actually said "no mage greater than Seirie" but yes breaking the barrier someone makes does not automatically mean you are stronger than them, as it's something they created not the person themselves. A lot of reactors seem to be under the assumption that Frieren is stronger than Seirie whenever they see this scene.

Didn't catch any new German words :) Just as a note: As the names are usually from German words, most "e" are pronounced as the "e" in "tend" So for examples the "e" in "Serie" and "Flamme" The first "e" in "Frieren" is an exception, as most "e" after an "i" just prolong the "i"-sound, so the way you said "Frieren" was correct :) (Note that the "ie" in "Serie" makes the exception of this exception 😅)

Yea I’ve never understood this thought process. Breaking the barrier is indeed impressive but it’s minuscule in terms of who Serie thought was taking the exam. At least that’s how I took it. Either way was amazing!

Tyler Miller

I think you’re on to something here. The core tenet of magic in this world is that which can’t be imagined can’t be achieved. So was the demon king undefeated for so long because it had a spell that prevented it from being killed by someone that could only imagine amassing power or loved battle? This author has a great way of turning subtle moments in really powerful themes so I sure it will great whatever the answer, but it is fun to speculate.

I love that Sense (sleepy-looking woman exam proctor) immediately knew that the barrier would break as soon as Frieren cast her spell. Frieren coming in clutch with the barrier break to give Kanne and Lawine the means for victory! Denken putting it all on the line in order to see the grave of his loved one 💪💪💪 With the discussion about why Frieren would be the one to defeat the Demon King, I see it this way. It's a difference in ideologies. Frieren is looking for peace, so she has a reason to actually defeat the Demon King, while Serie and Flamme love battle, so, if they defeat the Demon King, there'll be less conflict for them overall. Anyway, just the way I see it.

I love Denken, it was so epic he was just like "we're all out of mana so lets settle this the old way, fist fight" and just went straight in for it...you just KNOW he has "old man strength" too, that's a real thing and its scary! haha

The ending with Stark is hilarious, he's so happy he doesn't get told off by Fern constantly. Fern can be s little bit rough but I seriously ship Fern and Stark, though it would be obvious who would be in charge in the relationship haha XD

Xeth

Serie did smile at Frierren's refusal. Serie likes being surprised. Frieren's reason however disgusted her. It's one of my favorite blink and you miss it moments actually.

Rav

Oh yes we think this is it too!

Haylo

After editing we wondered if it had to do with magic being a visual tool! Maybe Flamme and Serie couldn't even picture a peaceful Era but Frieren could.

Haylo

The proctor said "The barrier will never break, no Mage is stronger than Serie." And we also were talking about "this instance". Serie seems insanely old and strong obviously!

Haylo

Theory time! 23:52 Well, the mage was talking about Serie's barrier. If we go back a few episodes, we know that Flamme too casts large barriers, like the one that protected the town from Aura or the one protecting that hideout where her true journal was. The spell Frieren used to break that one looked similar to what she did in the exam. So maybe Frieren knows about Flamme's (who was Serie's disciple) barrier magic enough that she could extrapolate how to break Serie's? At least that's how I think she did it. 25:28 Did Flamme say that, because the demon king has some kind of magic that gets more powerful the more aggressive the enemy mage is? Like Flamme and Serie being too bloodthirsty? Or was that more in a metaphorical sense, that if anyone was going to beat the demon is was someone who wants a peaceful era. As we got told this episode, the world of magic is the world of imagination. It's still a mystery, as we haven't seen the demon king/the fight against him yet. I love how the author makes you care for the side characters. After Wirbel in the last episode, that line you referred to at 25:50 about searching for magic and the fistfight made me fall in love with Denken's character.

Peter Butchens

Just because Frieren broke Serie's barrier doesn't automatically make her stronger than Serie haha

_kags

If you go real slow while she's charging up the barrier breaking spell there's an impact frame where it shows Serie. Almost like the weird geometry and spinning of the spell is her working backwards to the source of the spell like it's a lock to undo it. I love that little detail so much

Terrance

The way i've always interpreted the convo between Flamme, Serie, and Frieren, is that Flamme was stating that since Serie loved using magic for battle, and that Flamme herself was trained in that same way, they were both incapable of guiding the era of peace that would come after the Demon King's defeat. Flamme and Serie were likely strong enough to win, but would not have the drive to end a conflict that a part of them lives for. Whereas Flamme trained Frieren a bit differently along with Frieren's natural dispositions made her the ideal candidate to not only be capable of beating the demon king, but also having the will to seek him out in the first place, and continue to guide humanities magic forward. Conflict was motivator for Serie and Flamme, where for Frieren it's just a part of life. This is all conjecture on my part, but makes sense.

Gavin Barham

frieren breaking the barrier was so cool !! love how the instructor didn’t believe she could do it 😭 that’s the reason why she’s the goat

toasty

I love Serie. She is probably my favorite character in the show. I think she and Flamme couldn't fight the demon king, because magic is all about imagination and neither Serie nor Flamme could imagine themselves in a peaceful era.

Honeybadger

The moment Denken started throwing hands, he became my favorite secondary character. 😂 Frieren saying that she'd lose to Kanne's Reamstroha spell in the rain was dope too.

hurryupmode

after Frieren could it be solo leveling pleeease:)

Raphael andre

i was alrdy exited to see this !
