You both are literally the cutest. I love the emotion from the emotion

So if I got this correct the gist of Silky's backstory is that she was a dancer working on the side as a prostitute and doing odd jobs for money. Apparently she owed money to a group of criminals and did not make a payment because she bought the red dress for her daughter. One day those criminals broke into her home to get their money, assaulted her and kidnapped her daughter. As a result of her daughter being stolen Silky killed herself by jumping off a roof. That's the thud we hear at the end of her dance scene. Her spirit lingered at the spot of her death for uncounted years before she made a connection with Aira. In other words, Silky lost her daughter and Aira had just lost her mom. Aira mistook Silky's spirit as her mother and Silky thought Aira was her daughter. When Momo transferred Silky's aura to Aira not only did Momo see the events of Silky's life but so did Aira. Furthermore it appears that Silky's daughter was killed because Aira says something to the affect of, "...take them to a more fortunate, kinder world" before Silky vanishes. **The DanDaDan wiki confirms this because the manga has a panel of Silky and her daughter in what is implied to be heaven.** Anyways this episode was a complete emotional gut punch. It made me so sad and depressed but it was a masterpiece of story telling that I'm glad I got to watch. P.S. My initial take was that she stole money but according to the wiki/manga she actually owed money to a group of gangsters.

It seems like the most dangerous evil spirits/monsters have always been created from such emotional tragedies that have happened.

yeah i didnt notice this at first, but this time i was able to faintly pick out the other rooftops in the background during the dancing scene

I came for the awesome animation style, and stay for the emotional character development. I really wasn't expecting to go through childhood trauma with this show. I don't know if they will keep up that kind of character development or not, like showing Turbo Grannies tragic backstory. But I think we can assume that spirits turned into spirits in the first place because they went through a tragic event. Aira though has been redeemed in my eyes, and I think she won't be so self centered from now on. What this has done for Aira is that we got to see her own tragic history and it could be a possible explanation for why she seemed so stuck up before.

So this reminds me of the idea that demon slayer introduced us to with the human aspect in the demons, most ghosts or spirits when they pass on from our physical plane tend lose thoughts or ideas of themselves especially so the longer time passes, but tends to latch onto anyone or anything with strong emotions which was what happened when Aira met her as a kid. The emotion there was what Silky attached herself to and became that guardian figure but the longer she stayed in our world the more twisted she became as her "daughter" never saw/ acknowledged her until now, going back to how demon slayer introduces us to concept of the demons becoming less human the longer they live but is reminded by that intense emotion when Tanjiro showed them mercy/ kindness. Just like how demon slayer showed most demons are tragic tales of humans turning into monsters due to their life, I feel like this is the same idea of ghosts and spirits seemingly to following that same concept. Which is why spirit mediums irl talk about protecting yourselves because these types of spirits are the types that clings/ latched onto people and become what's haunting them.

her dance was on a roof and at the end she jumped off

And here we all thought we're going to watch some silly x-files anime with d*ck jokes. But this took me way off guard. I won't go into detail, but the mom's backstory reminded me of someone I knew, which was why it was very painful to watch. The author did well to depict all the emotions. The love. The pain. The fear. As did the animation team, who conveyed things well within the limits of what is allowed to show in anime with that rating. I should have seen the writing on the wall though that this show was going to have some tonal shifts. After all, they did very good job earlier showing the awkwardness of teenage relationships. And despite the silly antics have realistic characters and emotions. Even that they're unsure what to do with their power (like okarun who never had been in a fight asking what to do, now that he wasn't just running away) was something more realistic than other shows. It's a very surreal show, but very real at the same time. Glad you picked it up!

Whoa, I'm a mess after that. The piano had me entranced. The backstory is so tragic.. I wanted to jump in screen and call her an ambulance 🤣😔

Ben Asay

That makes so much sense in hindsight. Such a tragic story.. 😭

curious what the other two are?

Killua X

I think these kinds of stories are important because they help some people process their emotions. Not everyone can do that on their own, and these sad backstories can help them express feelings and open up.

Marokelo

The version in the manga of her backstory is much more grueling that they removed it from the anime

Take Me to Mars

I've only gotten emotional enough to cry over 2 other moments in anime, this one's the third, rewatching this for like the 20th time I can say my tears for this episode haven't flowed harder than this time with you girls

Tobi.SG

we've all been waiting for that episode's whiplash... i'm surprised only Kiss and not Haylee reacted to the "thud" of the mother basically yeeting herself off a roof after loosing her daughter. But Haylee was trying ther best to hold herself together lol The mother was selling her body, she owed them money which she used to buy her daughter the dress instead of paying them, so they took it out on her and her daughter.

I highly recommend reading chapter 16 of the manga. It is a quick read and much more clear on what transpired. The anime is more ambiguous because it is broadcast on tv and they can't show certain things.

Anime : 6 episodes of fun is about enough, now let's give them trauma

Fajar Kurniawan

The flashback with Silky starts with her in a hotel room and cash. The last time she takes the cash instead of leaving it, so I think the implication was, one of her many jobs was prostitution and she took money from her 'employers' to afford that dress for her daughter.

Pepperoni Pony .

One of her many part time jobs shown was sex work, and I believe the men that attacked her were connected to her pimp or debt collectors. I haven’t read the manga yet so I’m now exactly sure either. A truly beautiful episode though.

Dan Cervantes

You were right about the red light district aspect; love hotels can have that general layout, money on the counter, a timer, and a possible connection to a criminal underground. Silky made countless sacrifices in both life and afterlife. While we're all chopping onions, that beautiful dance sequence was her after the kidnapping on a rooftop. Rain water at her feet. The city skyline in the background. The starry night sky drawing a familiar scene to the room she and her customers frequented. Her heartbreak lead her to a final dance where she performed a jeté off and down to the beginning of her afterlife. Children are rumored to be more sensitive to things of the spirit world, so we can safely assume Aira greeted Silky and maybe broke her spiritual trance while she wandered.

Alex

I blame Oda and one piece for expiring new mangake to give such ridiculously sad backstories to the silliest looking characters

william munoz

Damn, that was really beautiful, surprisingly emotional episode
