Yeah Merry was more than a pet, but I remember when my dog died, the only things that came to mind were ways I could have taken better care of them. Just like Luffy going through everything they could have done better, I feel Oda really captured that natural response to grief and loss really beautifully. He even mixed some well juxtaposed humor with all the members catching strays (Sanji/Zoro idiots, Usopp not being good at fixing things) lmao. Rollercoaster of emotions and masterful writing 🤌🏼💋

2025-01-01 16:09:06 +0000 UTCSis you got it spot on about Usopp. During his dispute with Luffy, Usopp portrayed himself like an embarrassed hardheaded knucklehead, but it was for good reasons we had not known yet. He knows leaving the Going Merry by herself was wrong, and even then the greatest liar of all time still had to go beyond logic and could not imagine leaving a friend to pass alone. On the other hand, Luffy has the burden of upholding morale and must show his crew that he is not an incompetent leader that fails to stand by the decisions he makes. When Going Merry thanks the Strawhats during the last part of the viking funeral, Luffy takes that mask off and starts apologizing to Merry. For me personally I cracked at that specific moment watching that for the first time. The whole "A Real Man must be prepared and not cry" or whatever went out the window.

God knows just how many times I rewatch the scene. This scene just shows how Oda's storytelling is unmatch. Just so you know, this is one scene Oda was crying when he was drawing this.
