E14 - Privilege of the Young

Just 😭💔💘

It's really hard to put into words the raw emotion that this show is eliciting. Apologies if our outro was a little too personal, we were just trying to decipher all these feelings!
What a TOTAL masterpiece of an episode. Heiter's monologue about being an adult, Sein's advice and Frieren's head pats, Fern and Stark's bracelet, Himmel's gift, and the music was above and beyond as always... please, have mercy.
Thanks so much for suggesting this gorgeous show for us. Until the next one!

Gurl, I cry at the half episode stories all the time. and it depends on the person because each little story touches on a different emotion and different circumstance. one moment in episode 16 made me burst into tears, but I have friend who didn't cry at that episode at all.

DeetsViBre

oops sorry meant one of them :)

Isac christensen

Yeah my favorite episode of the season epic :D

I really love how the idea you described connects with the "people won't know how you feel unless you tell them" thing that Frieren and Sein have been saying. I'm anime-only as of now but I agree, the writing is absolutely beautiful. I like watching reactions of this show because of all of the cool comments that people write, I always manage to learn some new cool detail or a new way of looking at things, so I really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts!

Ben

Oh man, I remember binge watching tha show. All 7 Seasons.

Seeing how this episode affects you this much, I think you'll also like Natsume's Book of Friends. It's all about sentiments, and nostalgia like this. Maybe add it as an option in the next poll. I'd love to see you react to an older show as well for a change since you've been doing mostly recent ones (not One Piece of course).

This episode is so beautiful and tragic at the same time. Himmel loved her for so long and he knew she was not ready to reciprocate. So he left hints for her. He placed statues everywhere so that she will never be alone. He will always be there in some way. He did not want to fade into myth and fairy tale to be forgotten, especially by her. He gave her a ring that symbolized his eternal love for her. All in hopes that one day she will put the pieces together. No spoilers but I am a manga reader and it gets so better ;-)

I love when I watch an anime and it makes me see how strong my relationship with my wife is and how much I need her in my life.

Jason Willmore

dont apolagise for your emotions :) we all felt them as well. i love this show because it puts things in perspective and makes you think

sune jeppesson

Now I’m really serious, you guys need to stop making me cry 😂😂😭

Yves Virenge

Is Hayley still crying !? just curious hahaha

MishkaTho

It's an interesting episode title, "Privilege of the Young", because it explores the budding youth relationship with Stark and Fern while juxtaposing the past non-relationship between young Himmel and young Frieren. The symbol of eternal love speak volumes with how despite their relationship never being realized by Frieren, the love they shared can be passed on to Frieren's student who in her own way is going through the same motions Himmel did for Frieren, and Frieren vicariously can experience her missed opportunities through them with newfound appreciation. Also a side note, the importance of the clocktower in the background was a symbol of the time difference between Frieren and Himmel, and his promise with the ring of his eternal love despite her living much longer than him, realized or not. This was my favorite episode of the series.

BaTe0o7

This episode killed me too! Its not only Hayley that has a quivering lip right now!

Xeth

LOVE this episode of Frietherapy so much

Thomas

Hey y'all, love the reactions and hope you're both having a good holiday season! Random thought while you were talking about the relationships in this show... I would love to see your reactions to Kaguya-sama Love is War. Feel like you'd have so much fun with that one, and I'd have a blast re-living that show with y'all. Just a thought!

Newton Acker

The saying "if you really love someone, let them go" applies well to this scenario. He made the right choice. But what a beautiful scene with the clock tower, the sun setting, so romantic. And to have Stark and Fern parallel them was a wonderful choice.

Bon C

One of my fave anime movies! I agree, I think they’d love it

JustSomeGuy

I hope you react to the new ED when you get to it :)

Shulman

I think Himmel never told her straight out, because he may have felt of she loved him back she would lose him quickly from her prespective. I feel that she is just now starting to realize that she is and was in love with Himmel. It really is tragic

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

It's never too much crying with Frieren. These are good emotions, and it's important to feel them. A lot of the success of Frieren was (imo) because it tells such a human story, besides being about an elf in a fantasy setting. It's so much about relatable relationships and emotions, and you start reflecting on your own life and I think that's really good story telling. And to make this a bit sadder: I personally think Himmel never said anything, because he knew Frieren wasn't feeling the same and that she didn't even view him (or anyone) that way. But he loved her so much that it was ok for him and he was happy about the time they spend together.

AiraKT

I’m so happy yall adore this show so much!!

Michael Ballinger

This episode absolutely destroyed me the first time and it has not failed a single time after that.😭😢 That Heiter monologue has stuck with me ever since and it really cemented him as one of my favorite anime characters ever. Also Stark and Fern's relationship is just too cute, meanwhile Himmel and Frieren's is so tragic but sweet at the same time. ❤

Jacob Christoffersson

I love this episode! 😭 I rewatched the movie Your Name yesterday, and really think you guys will love it. I hope you are able to watch it soon, maybe after Frieren!?!

Amy M

This is the reason I watch your reactions!

Hector Garcia

truly one of the greatest episodes in the show, and don't ever apologize again for crying!!♡😭 it's a true a joy to find stories that work as mirrors and reflect glimpses of things we've experienced in the past or that help us realize our own feelings around important stuff in our life's, and i feel like this episode and series in general is the perfect example of that. i'm loving your journey with frieren so much🤍

beannieswife

Damn onion cutters. Anyways great reaction!

Art

So this isn’t the first time the ring has shown up, it showed up in episode 1 and another episode before (12 I think)

Henry Malinowski

You don’t need to apologize. I think part of this show’s brilliance is that it makes us think of our own lives.

Henry Malinowski

Been waiting for this one and it did not disappoint

sadboy

😭💔 That was the most beautiful scene!

Haylo

Don’t be embarrassed, it still gets me the same way and I’ve seen it dozens of times now. I think it was beautiful, what you were saying at the end. Get as personal as you like. I find it so endearing.

Caradoc Elmet

Don't ever apologize for crying in this show. I love watching people's reaction to the proposal, knowing you two it was going to melt ya.

Luke Wayman

An other thing that is interesting, Frieren flower on the ring isn't blooming, meaning their love never got the chance but Fern flower is blooming meaning their love is developing

JetLife2TheNextLife

Very possible, considering future information (from the manga). Himmel in general seems to know a lot more stuff than he lets on.

Into each mouth sum cum must fall but 2 much 2 much is falling in mine into each man sum dick must go up wher th sun don't shine

Nobody mentioned this but at the end, when Himmel is on his knee, the clock is perfectly between Frieren and Himmel, meaning Time is the only thing separating them

JetLife2TheNextLife

It's truly special when a piece of fiction that resonates with your own feelings, emotions and life comes along. This series is a celebration and reminder of the value of life and how one's own should be treasured as much as those you take that journey of life with. Sein's addition to the party is the sorely missing piece they needed right now because he's emotionally intelligent and mature enough to help them, including Frieren, to grow up. It's like Heiter said "Children need grown ups for emotional support" and Frieren is slowly but surely learning what that means through her memory of Heiter and the current actions of Sein, because emotionally she's still the same age as Stark and Fern.

so sweet how haylo often apologizes for crying/tearing up. We are(or at least i am) here for that exact reaction. Because we know how this show hits most of the people and sharing this maybe feels a bit embarrassing at first but i think it's really wholesome to see that i'm not the only one who sometimes cries in those specific moments. Already looking forward to the next 14 episodes. :)

MrMegaman94

I believe Himmel didnt explicitly told Frieren that he loved as a way to protect her. She wasnt interested in him in a romantic way (in fact elfs usually lack romantic instincts, which is why they are almost extinct). At that point in Frieren's life, she even thought that she didnt even knew Himmel that much 🤣. So he tried to express his love to her, as it is the natural thing to do, but he respected that Frieren just wasn't ready to something more. To this day I think Himmel was extremely strong, considering he let Frieren go while he could have just make her stay with him for years with any stupid excuse (as Heiter did). what a great show ❤️

Leonardo Espinoza

i didnt cry most of the time watching this show but this ep was the first time i did. this episode is actually crazy good

Degenerick

Don't apologise for how you are feeling, you guys are all of us when we watch this. And things hit everyone differently and we love you for it. Thank you for sharing why you felt this way ❤️ this show is so wholesome and beautiful, it resonates with all of us because of it. It's such a celebration of the things that make us human, so of course it's going to make us feel things and cry our eyes out. This is also why I want you guys to watch Mob Psycho 100 afterwards ❤️ thank you for a good Saturday cry ❤️

Timeismana

Himmel had once-in-a-generation rizz. Proposing to someone you know won’t understand for 100 years is truly playing the long game haha

Daniel Lee

This show is perfect. It does fights better than shonen anime, fantacy better than isikai anime, and now romance better than any rom-com does.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Fr, especially Haylo's parallel to how much she treasures her husband. She's got such a big heart it's so sweet

CH

the guy with the spell sells trinkets so would not be to unusual for him to have a spell to find things like that

Richard Rear

Been waiting for this one. Always a tear-factory, this episode. Also, there's a reason that Frieren's ring looks more like a carrot than a lotus: it's a bud. It didn't have the chance to bloom. Unlike Fern's bracelet, which HAS bloomed. Make of that what you will 😜

CH

he never married for him she was the one

Richard Rear

imo it was obvious that she is at least engaged because of the ring. :D

MrMegaman94

New German vocab: Raad (region; wrong spelling, could be "Rad" or "Rat") = wheel (Rad) or advice (Rat) Bande (woods) = gang Awesome episode and reaction. Don't feel bad about showing emotion, that's what we're here for :) Btw, did Haylee ever mention she's married? It's the first time I've heard of it. I mean, of course she wears a ring, I just never connected the dots tbh

Snowman9712

"SHE DIDNT EVEN REALISE SHE WAS MARRIED TO THE MAN!" goddddd I'm laughing while crying too

soupynoodle

This :)

Heero Marks

you two are so cute watching and crying 🥹

Alice Lima

I've been so excited for this one ^o^
