In the sbs(they actually cover this one), Oda confirms Chimney is 1/4 mermaid. She's the granddaughter of Kokoro(fishman) who married a regular human and had a half fishman, half human son

Besides, when a mermaid and a fishman produce children, the outcome is just either fully a mermaid or fully a fishman anyway.

Her grand kid was able to save Luffy from those insane waters when he was drawning. While Chimney isn't a full mermaid, she did get insane swimming ability. Also we did see a mermaid earlier in One Piece as a cover story in the manga but unfortunately that cover story didn't get animated.

2024-12-27 14:56:51 +0000 UTCThe baby part made me laugh, the little punch was somehow precious in the face of a threat like Lucci 😆 I love the range of emotions that One Piece inspires, going from cuteness overload “He’s just a baby!” to smug cockiness “I love his voice when he gets serious” to then crying for the group that helped the Strawhats. Oda has been consistent in his treatment of side characters, making us feel for them as intensely as we feel for main characters, but I think it particularly starts to shine and solidify in this arc and the previous (Water 7), since it feels as though it has an Alabasta formula to it. Thank you for the reaction! I love how you two are thoroughly invested, and how you pay attention to the little details 💖
