2024-12-20 22:16:09 +0000 UTCThe Asura are not necessarily demons. There's a bit of a Christian world-view bias happening in the translation, I think. The Sura are basically Gods/Divinities/Celestial beings/etc. Asura simply means "not Sura" and refers to any supernatural being that the Sura don't consider to be Gods. Demon is a bit of a loose translation here but I suppose this is intended for American children to watch and the subtitles have to be understandable and readable in a fairly short time to match the flow of the conversation happening in Japanese so I understand why they do that. I'm not complaining about it at all. I just want it to be clear this translation of Asura as "Demon" doesn't really mean the same thing Westerners would mean by the word. If I had watched this when I was under 10 years old my mother might well have pulled the plug so, I guess I just wanted to make sure that was clear.

Asura are characterized by obsession with drink, greed, and lust for more power and violence. Sorta fitting for Zoro if you discount the greed bit.
