The depiction of Usopp's insecurities are just so damn good. You guys were absolutely right that he was seeing himself as broken as the Merry and deciding to leave with the ship because he thinks if they can leave the Going Merry behind, which has been integral to their journey so far, how could they want to keep him around, when (in his mind), he's even less useful than that. Usually Toei goes overboard with the flashbacks to pad out time, but here I think it was done so well. Right before the fight started they show the flashback where they tell Usopp to get on the ship and it just makes you smile, I saw it on your faces, and even the dozen or so times I've seen this I also smile that time, and it goes right back to the dead of night with them facing each other and the smiles evaporate. Then they show it again at the end of the fight, but no one can smile at it anymore, all those happy memories tainted with the insecurities of the present, not being able to experience them in the same way anymore. It hurts. But as much as it hurts, it's one of my all time favorite Usopp fights. In the same breath that he calls himself weak, he's desperately trying to prove to himself that he's not. Oda's writing is just top notch.

When Usopp says "Luffy, you're the man who will become the pirate king" he still believes in him despite all the tension and animosity. That's the part that hurt me. Two friends who do indeed care but like someone else on the comments said, they're 17....just acting instead of thinking. Oda, thanks for this masterpiece of a series.

I agree with you 100%, I think it's because Luffy already had the time to process the situation and come to a conclusion and he didn't think to give Usopp a proper explanation like everyone else got (because ya know its Luffy). So when he outright told Usopp hey we're getting a new boat and then tried to explain afterwards it was already too the flame had been lit. This was definitely a massive learning point for them both, if the situation would have been handled with more care it wouldn't have happened.

I feel like Luffy is the one being more irrational here. Yes, Usopp is having trouble accepting Luffy's decision, yes he's yelling and acting rude towards Luffy. But no matter as a friend or as a captain, Luffy should have never told Usopp to just leave if he has a problem with this decision. In fact, Usopp never even mentioned anything about leaving until this point. The fact that Luffy can say those words against Usopp shows how he's currently being irrational, and let his emotion got the best of him.

It's easy to forget that they are pirates before friends. Luffy must have the crew's respect, and they must obey him when Luffy makes a decision as Captain. It doesn't matter if they don't agree with Luffy or even if Luffy is wrong, when the Captain gives an order, you must obey regardless of the consequences. When you join a pirate crew you surrender part of your freedom and say I entrust my life, death, and choices to you, my Captain. In the same way the 'Davey back fight' worked, the Captains were the only ones who could choose what to do and their crews had to obey. Luffy made the choice that was best for his crew, while Ussop would have killed everyone with his choice. Luffy was a Captain. Ussop was weak, ironically in his strongest showing every he only showed how cowardly and weak he was. Their Character really showed in these episodes.

I actually think Luffy gained some respect for him this episode. Usopp's got an iron will when he's serious, and he was a much better fighter than he expected.

Yes, that was my point, just not as well laid out as I had intended. Luffy didn't see any of Usopp's fights, thus the advantage in tactics to Usopp. Usopp has seen enough Luffy's fighting style to come up with a strategy to fight him

Thinking about it, Usopp actually didn't witness so many fights of Luffy..
I can think of Arlong and Laboon, where he saw most of the fight - and then partially the fight against Mr. 3, Satori and Foxy. But I'd say for most - if not all - other (canon) fights, Usopp was not present.. π€ (he still saw more fights than the other way round, though)

Hands-down the best fight in One Piece. This moment specifically when every one of their personalities are tested and get to shine at once.. Possibly my favourite, but if not one of my absolute top episodes in the entire series. The foreshadowing up to this point, as well as the absolute high of emotions this piece of drama brings is just so beautiful and raw. I can't really remember how I felt the first time watching through One Piece as a whole, but if I have to point to any moment that sold the show to me, this is the one.

If you look at the situation in a certain light, the fight between Luffy and Usopp isn't that surprising. Two 17 year-old boys didn't talk things out properly when their emotions were running high, and let their anger get the better of them. Obviously the stakes are dialed way up in anime, but boys who are close friends get into fights all the time.

Seeing the Merry cry always hurts, This is still one of my favorite fights as it shows how Usopp has grown as a warrior. I'm glad that Luffy fought Usopp with all he got as itr shows the respect that Luffy has for him. And it isd one of the hardest decisions Luffy has had to make as captain. Being a pirate is not all fun and games. Both f the characters grow from this duel.

So, the reason that Luffy couldn't throw the fight is because that would've literally been adding insult to injury. Usopp would've seen that act as Luffy taking pity on him, making him feel a thousand times worse. Luffy knows this in his heart, so he fights at full strength to honor the now severed bond he has with Usopp.
Now, I call this fight what would actually happen when Batman fights Superman. Ironically, this is a more realistic duel between brains vs brawn. The reason Usopp is able to control most of the fight is because he's seen almost every fight Luffy's fought since Usopp joined the crew whereas Luffy has rarely seen Usopp fight (honestly, he might've never seen Usopp fight before, now that I think of it). Now, while Usopp is controlling the fight, he's not doing much more than being a nuisance to Luffy so, eventually, the strength difference becomes too much and the fight ends after Luffy lands his second solid hit on Usopp πππ
Ooh boy, Oda really dialed up the emotional damage with this one πππ

The genius of the writing here is that Oda managed to use Merry as a way for Usopp to project his own insecurities about his value on the crew probably because it was a gift from Kaya.. so when Luffy told him that he would find a new ship, he completely projected.
I'm on the side of Usopp about the merry, but his handling of his emotion is not ok.
This arc is amazing in term of character development.
(EDIT: I said this prior to the third episode, you nailed the analysis at the end. It's indeed all about pride)

Usopp is 100% being irrational, he's running on an emotional high and isn't allowing himself to process what's going on around him. His feelings on everything are 1000000% valid but the way he's expressing them and handling the situation is NOT okay.

Glad you did 3 episodes here, would have been a horrorful weekend waiting for the next episode!
This tearful moment shows how deep One Piece is and that it's not just "a happy adventure for kids"-show.
I agree with your point of view on why Usopp is leaving.
However, in between episodes you mentioned the moment in Skypia. Note that the main difference between back then and now is that then Usopp said "We can always repair the Going Merry" - however if you'd believe the shipwrights, now you can't.
Of course we know, that the group would never do this, but as he stated during the second episode, this is a fear which has been on his mind for a while. He sees himself as the weakest of them all and if they start abandonning their "useless" nakamas, then he believes to be the next one.
In addition, I believe that up to now Usopp saw himself as the guy who repaires the ship - but now we're looking for a shipwright for our crew, which means that he will be "less useful" to the crew in his eyes, strenghening his fear.

I also think that's why he constantly tries to upsell himself and be "captain Usopp", cuz he feels weak and useless.
Erik Grimms
2024-10-18 14:39:29 +0000 UTC
I think Luffy was nonchalant about how he told Usopp about getting a new ship because he didn't want Usopp to blame himself about the money or not being able to keep the ship in good condition, to make it more a "I decided this, it's not your fault, it's my decision"
I also think Usopp sees himself in the Merry and is afraid to also be cast aside because he's not essential like the navigator or doctor or cook, he's just been desperately trying to find a purpose on the crew and he doesn't really have one. So his insecurity made him lash out and then his stupid pride got in the way.
I also think he doesn't understand that while they're all friends and that's great, a pirate ship is not a democracy. Luffy is ultimately the captain and what he says goes.
Love watching your jouney.
