Iono if anyone said this already but I believe Pell was re-written as alive due to that episode coming out close to 9/11. So, in respect for the US, they decided not to have a death associated with the bomb.

First all this is head cannon and a potential spoiler. Second, the only reason he survived was that this was in 2001 after 9/11 and Oda confirmed he wanted to lighten the mood by revealing that Pell survived.

If you think back on it, it's even cleverly foreshadowed the whole time that Robin was not really on Crocodile's side per se. She was responsible for "killing" Igaram, she did not kill Vivi or Pell in that encounter when she easily could have, she saves Luffy when he would have certainly died and tells Pell to get him help, and then gives the antidote for Luffy's poisoning as well and reveals she never intended to be straight with Crocodile about the contents of the poneglyph anyway because she knows what he would do with that information.

Once they reach episode 300+, they'll probably feel the difference in pace as the review of past episodes start taking longer and actual episode length gets shrinked, with a lot more pauses and that sort of stuff dragging on the show. And it will keep getting worse after the moment you mentioned. Eventually they'll probably increase the number of episodes they watch per video as there will be very little content per episode, unless they switch to One Pace or something like that.

And about Pell: Oda has an issue with killing characters. He knows Pell had many fans and he doesn't want to take the character away from those fans. There's also a story about something his grandma told him about death that made him not want to kill characters but I don't remember that very well. Pell is the main example people think of when talking about Oda's inability to kill off characters, but this one can still be rationalized (Falcons are extremely fast at diving, he could've moved away from the bomb at the last second, also the bomb could be weaker when self detinating than when shot from a cannon as that was the original plan). There are times that characters magically survive that sadly cheapen some moments of the story, but Oda will improve on this after a while.

Mr. 2 is one of those characters that was only really an enemy because they happened to be in an enemy crew. There are many characters throughout the show that were enemies but would totally have bonded really well with luffy and/or the crew if they had met in different circumstances.

The inbetween of this episode discussed that feeling of freaking out over just how emotional you can get over this series. What you gotta keep in mind with that is that the #1 reaction you will face through life when bringing One Piece around in your pocket of experiences is people reacting to the length of the story. Well now you know just how a piece of fiction can collect people along for an adventure this long. I like to think the more simplistic artstyle exists as a way to help digest just how big of an adventure was planned, it has just become a little jaring to some people after over two decades. Now heres a much more personal riff, the writing of the adventure takes a very big turn at a certain point, and it both announces and highlights when that step is. The problem is the production quality of the anime shifts entirely, many blame this to it the airtime being changed to broadcast as a saturday morning cartoon. You're not alone, there's a lot of creators who started with the live action and are making their way through. I just hope you guys realize you're at a big step becuase you technically just finished the story for the live action season 2. You're a long way before you have to worry about it, but I think the next arc gives a little taste of how the anime version of the series focuses on expressing itself as a weekly event and not a well digestable continuous storty. It's just a bet I'm taking now, but I think by this time next year when Netflix season 2 comes out, at this pace, you're going to enjoy the Live Action when it releases in the summer as a show more than you are the anime, a big part being the design of the anime pacing making you feel that you're behind in the story and the rest of the fans are almost watching the "Live" version of the show. I just think it's gonna feel harsh when you run out of Live Action episodes to be going through the anime ones that are in the story at that point. The studio eventually starts actually getting budgets representitive of the ludicrous amounts of money the franchise has earned and the anime's universal popularity becomes undeniable again.

It's okay if you watch 144 without skipping the pre-title section that serves as recap as that scene plays out completely in the beginning of 144, but if you're like me and you tend to skip the in-episode recaps, you could wind up missing context for that one.

I think that's a bit of an urban legend among the fans applying false causality to a correlation. Pell surviving has a lot more to do with the kind of story Oda is telling at the time than it does any kind of reactionary response to real world events. Death is something incongruent with the joyous whimisical swashbuckly kind of adventures that Luffy and the crew are having. It's the same reason why Igaram didn't die. Besides, Pell's sacrifice-but-not-really is so iconic, Hollywood couldn't help but rip it off beat-for-beat (if you know, you know)

Oh man, protecting that reveal for the last several months has been such a struggle. Some of yall do not make it easy. That's why opening 3 is so spoilery. Like fifteen episodes before she joins, she is a significant part of the opening. Not even shadowed or hinted it, she's just blatantly there operating as part of the crew. It's such a profound spoiler because it spoils so many things at once: - It spoils Robin joining the crew - It spoils Vivi NOT joining the crew - It spoils Bon Clay NOT joining the crew - It spoils Robin's betrayal of Crocodile - It spoils Robin's "death" when Crocodile cuts her down - There is no room whatsoever for plausible deniability. Many of the openings that show future events do so under a veil of uncertainty. Like, sure, opening 1 spoils Sanji and Usopp joining (and Zoro and Nami) but it's not that much of a surprise in the way that Robin is. Robin is so out of left-field, and the opening softens the blow in the worst way. It's a really frustrating opening.

I think the reason Pell survived is because the end of alabasta came out around 9/11/01 so I think the editors didn't want to make someone die from a terrorist attack....heard that a few places

What I love the most about this finale for the Alabasta Saga is how Oda ties every arc since we entered the Grand Line. From Laboon waiting for his crew, Mr. 9 and Ms. Monday fighting for Vivi and Igaram, Dorry and Broggy's 100 year duel, the bond between Hiruluk and Chopper (and Doctorine) and even Mr.2 becoming friends with the crew, this whole saga is filled with these moments that highlight the importance of friendship, no matter the form or time. And now it's a brand-new saga with a brand-new crewmate. Can't wait to watch this part of the story again with you
