I think kiss is the first person I’ve seen get emotional about the eldians turned into titans and used as weapons. I did too when I first watched and it shows how much you understand the horrible themes in this show.

Aww Kiss ... ohhh Haylo.. sweet ones, it's ok. it's ok to feel these emotions... And what's worse is that It only gets worse! (not meant as a joke or meme, for real now, real talk) : I truly appreciate that you are feeling what you are feeling. That's kinda the intent of this episode called "the other side of the sea"... it's basically watching what is happening from a different perspective. We've seen Eren's perspective and the people of Paradis, but now we're seeing another side of this long war... which is just showing that War is never black and white.. it's a greyscale of suffering on both sides. The indoctrination is very apparent here, like Haylo said : a lot of brain washing, sins of the father, sins of the ancestors, sins of the past, sins of the self... it's all indoctrination and generational trauma built on fear from all sides... and you're now seeing a small portion of what that means for all our characters, old and new... And like i said, it only gets worse, so keep a tissue box nearby close to that notebook. And don't be afraid to FEEL the show. That's the whole point of this show. People sign in to watch because "omagerd action against titans YAYY KILL THOSE MONSTERS" and then when the mystery starts to unfold: "oh.. my god... the poor titans i feel bad for these poor people". Even your emotional investment with Reiner, back in s2e6, a lot of people will go "yah screw you reiner and annie and bert, ya'll are traitors!" and now you're seeing what these traitors are fighting for, and what conditions they've been raised in, you can see what "young annie/reiner/bert would have looked like by juxtaposing what Gaby and Colt and Falco are dealing with at their own age, the age of which they get trained to take over the warrior mantle for the "sake of the motherland" to "prove themselves as lesser devils" and you see what happens when the world think they've lost their edge in the war. They can get seen as weak opportunity to eradicate them too.

From what I remember wit studios (seasons 1-3) dropped didn't pick up season 4 of aot because of what there is to come animation wise, it's a lot of episodes and run time for one season. So we waited a good amount of time for Mappa to pick it up and release season 4 😭 however imo this was the base case scenario because Mappa adapted the manga perfectly, this is how they actually look in the manga where as wit studios style of animation gave then a lil bit of a different look

Actually we do already know as of season 3 that the rest of the world hates Eldians, not just Marley or the Mid-Alliance. Sgt Gross suggests its the wish of the entire world to eradicate Eldians, and Hange says in 3x22 that their opponent is "the entire world", not just Marley or a few nations. Not defending the initial spoiler in this comment chain, but to the person who said we don't know how widespread the anti eldian hatred is in the rest of the world, that's not true.

Being this affected just shows that you understand exactly what is happening here. It's so upsetting because it reflects what we humans do time and time over, convincing ourselves that other groups must be less than, or even worse something evil based purely on something out of their control like race, in order to justify injustice and greed. It's very upsetting, especially knowing it is still very much happening today and will likely never stop.

I always love that you guys recognize how great the music is. "Ashes on the Fire" is definitely one of my favorite tracks from the whole show. Btw Season 4 they switched production studios that's why the animation and art style is different. Also Season 4 mostly has a different composer than the past 3 but the score is still really great score.

Season 4 baby, here we are! I still wished that you'd reacted to the awesome new opening, but you have to do what you think is best. Now I really can't wait for you to react to all of the openings and endings once this ends. Pls take your time when reacting. Ideally, imo, you should watch an opening live, then do some research off screen (just a few minutes) and record the reaction with the new background info (like lyrics/meaning of the song, what composer or band, etc.). But no pressure, I'm sure I will enjoy it either way. 😉

It's fascinating how each season (including "parts" of season like in s3p1 and s3p2) has a complete tone shift and no 2 are alike. Incredible how we came from a "giant zombie" show to a War related show in such a short while. Now that we know what titans are, it gets hard to watch innocents used liked this so I totally get Kiss. It's not faceless monsters no more, it's humans, everywhere it's humans, never monsters and that removes the "monster scary" part and adds a "terrifyingly sad" vibe to the whole show. Many people don«t like this shift but as someone who enjoyed the show through and through I think this is when it evolves since it is the first time you fully see the world and the dimension of what is happening. Wish you lots of strenght for this "last season". Lots of love from Portugal!

It's not a big deal for me, because they probably are a bit ahead and already know about this. And even if they don't, it's a minor thing. And all that doesn't matter if they don't read through this discussion in the first place. Anyway, it's great that you picked this up on your first watch. Doesn't change the fact that you came to a wrong conclusion though. It just so happened that it turned out right for you. Waging war against Marley obviously means fighting against Eldians. The point of the argument was that you cannot conclude from this that the whole world hates Eldians more than Marleyans do. I really don't understand how, given these premises, you come to your conclusion. I guess one argument that I could buy is that it's implied/hinted at by the author. But whatever, no point in continuing this discussion. In the end we're here to enjoy AoT reactions, so keep enjoying those and have a good day.

All im saying is this is what I picked up my first time watching. Marleyans aren’t afraid to come into physical contact with Eldians like we have seen up to this point. Even saw it in the episode. These other nations obviously see Eldians in a more extreme way than Marley because they’re at a point where they are afraid to even touch them. This is what I noticed on my first viewing. If you guys had paid attention you also would’ve caught that. Also you commenting on this is running counterintuitive to what you want. I mean my comment is so insignificant but you guys are turning it into a way bigger deal than it actually is. No I haven’t spoiled anything that hasn’t already been revealed

I feel like the comments are going to be very spoiler-y (technically even saying "I cried" or "I love x or y character" can be a spoiler, because characters were shown to often evolve/mature throughout a season, ie. Jean / Eren have grown a lot in every season + it could also mean they might/might not die which would kinda spoil some scenes), I would really advise you not to read them until you're at least done with part 1 and then same for part 2 :')

why would you spoil those things ? it's their FIRST episode and it has been shown how bad Marley is to Eldians way more than the rest of the world so far. Like, a little girl got eaten by dogs, hundreds of people got basically killed (turned into titans) for disobeying because they were eldians. And we've only seen 1 (one) soldier from another country calling them "devils", which, is also the word used my Marley to describe the people living on the Island. So, no, they can't know anything about how the rest of the world sees them.

1: Because Marley wasn’t afraid to let Eldians touch them as we see in the episode Eldians are patching up Marleyan soldiers when that Allied Nations soldier denied getting his wounds healed because he didn’t want to be tainted. 2: Yes we don’t know if it’s literally the entire world. I was probably just giving a general statement in order to avoid spoilers. They are literally fighting Eldians in that episode. There’s little to no Marleyans fighting. And the allied nations obviously understand the armbands because he was able to point out Falco as an Eldian and they were unsure about Gabi because she had taken hers off. “Don’t touch me I’ll be tainted you filthy devil” Again I picked this stuff up my first time watching it. It amazes me how stupid some AOT fans can be. And you’re also making this a bigger deal than it was. No, your example is a soldier who shows his hatred for Eldians. The most we can assume from this is that his nation, too, has this mindset (for argument's sake let's at the allied nations as well). But there's also plenty of remarks from Marleyan soldiers towards Eldians. So: 1. How do you conclude that Marley treats them better? They literally just used them as canon fodder 2. Allied nations, yes. But we don't know if it's the whole (rest of the) world. Also, they're fighting Marley first and foremost, not Eldians.

to clarify your biggest question (no spoilers, this was all in the episode) this current 4 year war started because marley lost the collosal titan and the female titan to paradis, which to the perception of other countries/the world, is a major hit to their military might. technology is beginning to surpass titan powers (anti armor cannons/trains/etc.) so all this in combination, in the eyes of marleys enemies (middle eastern nation) looks like a good opportunity to attack. hence the war.

Glad you guys love Mappa's animation! I honestly love both Wit and Mappa for this show both for entirely different reasons, but I do feel like the grittiness of Mappa's animation came in exactly when it needed to. Poor Kiss, I feel you! This whole season had me drowning in tears even for the seemingly smallest things. War is hard to watch, and they don't shy away from telling the heartbreak that comes along with it. I won't spoil anything at all, but there is a lot of messy war stuff in this series. There are no black and white, good and bad. The Eldians have been brainwashed into thinking the reason they are treated so bad is because of the horrible things the people in Paradis have done, plus Marley are a massive nation and hold all the power. To go against Marley is to be excommunicated to Paradis, along with your friends and family. The Brainwashing/Propaganda and threats to their family is likely why the Eldian Warriors go along with it, but a lot more will be explained as the series go on. I'm going to take a break from the reactions for a few weeks as I've got an exam coming up at work, then I'll binge it once you guys get to episode 9 or 10. Also, the reason for the change in production is because another studio (Mappa) took over production after season 3. I actually think the change in style suits the show well since we have a bit of a time skip and the themes of the show change a bit. Hope you both enjoy!

This increase in production you're noticing is probably because Mappa Studio is now animating the series as opposed to Wit Studio whom animated the first 3 seasons. Both animation styles are amazing but Mappa has animated some other really big shows such as Jujutsu Kaisen, Vinland Saga and Banana Fish just to name a few.

Awww Carissa, just wanted to reach through the screen and give you a hug during this episode. It's such a horrific scene merged with such great (but horror inducing) music that really makes a point to the kind of society Marley is. We got a glimpse of it at the end of S3 but S4 starts by showcasing it in it's full horror.
