Maybe fragments of a token or signet of his heritage? Or it could also be proof that he is not who says? Since he's a good pickpocket, it could just be a pouch with stolen things and only the symbol is important. As an aside, do you think the mithril fragment will be forged into Galadriel's Nenya?
