Blind Wave (and fans) need to understand that in an over saturated and highly competitive market such as film and television, it’s okay to dislike things! It sends a message to studios that people won’t casually accept mediocrity, laziness, soulless cash grabbing, etc. You can acknowledge strengths of productions or elements that worked, sure, but you also don’t have to work so bloody hard to find the overall good in something just because it’s popular. I’m amazed these guys seem to enjoy things like this dumpster fire or most CW shows, but when actually well thought out and incredibly realized sci-fi are presented to them, they start trying to over analyze and actually be critics (initially The Expanse, BladeRunner and BladeRunner2049, Dune, Code Gease, even aspects of SteingsGate, Vinland Saga and Cowboy Bebop). There’s a disparity to their reactions and it’s getting noticeable. Kindly grow out of your marvel and Star Wars and 80’s nostalgia trips - things that I and everyone else enjoy as well - and actually challenge yourselves on expanding your pallet and holding bad filmmaking accountable. You deserve better. More views aren’t worth the loss of integrity. Look back at your GoT season 8 reactions and try not to cringe..

Look, it’s simple. No one with any real grasp of the source material expected a 1:1 copy of the original to be satisfied. Its just not practical or necessary. And don’t constantly quote the minor but very loud and toxic minority as an excuse to dismiss genuine criticism of this mess of a show. Despite a few ‘fans’ attempting to gatekeep the series by getting caught up in the minutia of cosmetics or music or the ethnicity of casting or just having spite towards the actress behind Faye, those were NEVER going to be the real deal-breakers for me. Even the personally repulsive choice of Cho, misled that it may have been, could have easily been salvaged by two things: 1. An honest understanding of the source material. This is the big one, the lack of comprehension and poor vision: Cowboy Bebop is NOT an action romp. It is not an edgy comedy. It has wacky and zany moments and a genuine sense of humor, sure, but it is not silly or grotesque or indulgent. It is not grindhouse or exploitation, which is the approach the creators of this series have taken here. Bebop was a series that felt comfortable in its skin. It knew how to take itself seriously without being overly sentimental, mixing a level of suave-cool and melancholy-somber effortlessly with its rich narrative material, incorporating its occasionally charming, horrific, and ‘weird’ tones like jazz improvisation that never overstayed its welcome and didn’t descend into kitsch. Watanabe’s masterpiece didn’t pander to a lower denominator and it didn’t pretend to be something it wasn’t. This in comparison a show that seems afraid of what it was supposed to be, instead taking the easy path and hiding behind its hidden mission statement of being over the top and anime; dialing things up to 11 and then blaming the shows failure on the audiences inability to enjoy the material.. An overarching narrative also wasn’t essential, because it was wholly about the characters and their lives while they were with one another, and the ghosts of their past. The nature of the show does not lend itself well to a standard point A to point B Hollywood narrative, nor a longer episode run time, nor does it easily lend itself to a more fleshed out villain.. particularly if that fleshing out is bad. This extends to the other characters as well. The original was also genuinely cinematic, not cheap. It was inspired by spaghetti western, sure, but also by films by Scorsese and Kurosawa and Mann. Stylish movement, intentional framing, dramatic lighting. All of that is missing in this show that instead took an The Umbrella Academy 1.5 approach because ‘it’s anime and it needs to be wacky’. 2. A budget and production schedule that afforded the ability to pursue that vision. Some of the short comings of the show, regardless of failure to launch, could have been better served with a larger budget to support a more immersive experience. By this I mean more time and manpower allotted to post-production for better CGI, more talent on-set to make practical but beautiful designs, and especially more bankroll for bigger named actors who could pull off the material. I don’t NEED the cast to look like the show point for point. Vicious and Spike look nowhere close, as far as I’m concerned. What I need is for talented actors to tackle fantastic material and pull it off. I argue that this show is bad. As stated before, or six friends who have started the show without having seen the original, only one of them has finished it. Stand-alone or otherwise, this could have been SO MUCH MORE, and people aren’t wrong for pointing that out. Oh, and please don't try to talk over or dismiss Rick’s criticisms and opinion less. It’s really getting noticeable. I disliked Rick’s take on Game of Thrones, but he is entitled to speak his mind without being censored or wrestled out due to fear of alienating the fanbase. It helps that his points are largely valid.
