2020-06-09 00:47:37 +0000 UTCBy the way, it is actually hard to make a clear cut between fictionality and the real world. I highly recommend the works by Stuart Hall on Representation. In a very abbreviated form, the real world constructs/produces the fictional world, which in turn has an influence on the real world. Watching TV Shows/Films with Cops "who don't play by the rules" will undoubtedly color the way that people think about the police. As an extreme example, when you see the protagonists of shows like 24 and Homeland use torture to "save America" again and again then that can influence your opinion on how you see the use of torture by the government. And I know that this is going way too deep for a patreon comment, but I can really recommend for anyone to read a bit about these concepts before making quick judgements about other people who might currently feel uncomfortable with police shows.

I mean, probably not, because then you would not have written your ignorant comments, but telling someone who is voicing their valid concerns with the propagandistic function that a lot of cop shows have that they "need help" is just so low that I cannot properly express how much you have disqualified yourself from any valid discussion whatsoever.

2020-06-08 23:24:05 +0000 UTCI understand where you are coming from. Personally, this show, however, holds a special place for me just because of the stop and frisk episode in a couple seasons. The way they handled the experience Terry had in a 22 minute comedic sitcom blew my mind. Even though I’m not a cop I can relate so easily to his anger and frustration and feelings of helplessness so well.

But I just don't have it in me to watch it right now, given what is happening, seeing what the NYPD is doing in real life. I don't wanna pass judgment on those who are able to still enjoy the show, god knows we need some levity right now, and if you can find it in Brooklyn 99, then good for you. I'm just not there yet. Hopefully things change for the better, and a show that depicts police as basically "friendly, cuddly and colorblind" can stop feeling so discrepant. Still, love you guys, looking forward to finding out the winner of the anime poll :)
