Doctor Who 11x3 Reaction - Early Access!

Comments

Great reaction. I’m not a fan of the writing of this new era, but this is one of the episodes I do enjoy. In fact the historical ones seem to be stronger in my opinion. Agree with others commenting on the music, as I loved Murray Gold’s score and have all the albums. I liked the themes he came up with for characters. The music change was a big one for me.

To be fair as a Brit , i have only ever had 2 incidences of racism..but they were both from childhood. And at the time i didn't even recognize it as that..I just thought they were idiots because i wasn't from the place the slur was attributed to. When i was growing up, American history is treated like any other foreign country's history. Only later on i saw things about 1950s America were brought up in movies a very sad time.

This is one of the reactions from this series that I've been looking forward to. Hopefully it's not a spoiler to say that the historical episodes, so far, seem to be a strength of the Chibnall era. Again, another episode with great music - the theme associated with Rosa Parks is particularly a standout. I'm glad you all seemed to appreciate this one. My complaints about this episode are probably a bit nitpicky. Krasko is pretty lackluster as a villain, for one thing. For another, it makes the Civil Rights movement feel far less robust than it was. Would Rosa not refusing to give up her seat on that day or with that bus driver really have seriously impacted or derailed it? That's doubtful - there were just so many folks working on desegregation and they had a long term plan with lots of community involvement. It was never about just one person, which shouldn't take away from Rosa Park's personal bravery in that moment. But overall, I think it's a great episode and it seems to have made an impact with a lot of viewers. Vinette Robinson did a great job as Rosa Parks. If you ever happen to visit Montgomery, check out the Rosa Parks Museum because it's fantastic. The archive is great too - lots of digitized documents and oral histories with people who took part in the boycott, community members, and former members of the police.

Great reaction. A very mature discussion was really appreciated. There are many contemporary cases of overt racism to tell stories about. One was just released on Netflix called When They See Us.

"Appreciate it for what it is"? A piece of shit?

Joe Entwistle

I though witch finders was good, mainly just for alan cummings

Struan Robertson

I've thought that Shane hasn't been feeling Who for a few series (not as much as the others anyway) so it's good to see him enthusiastic about it again.

Matgo Styles

After watching this, I'm pretty sure they will like and appreciate this series for what is.

Also, Eric and Aaron are correct. This is the first time the show has gone into *such* a charged racial atmosphere. Most of the other times they've been to there has been racism, but it's so casual it's just mentioned and is reacted to by the characters with brief disdain and they move on. And back in the time when Martha went to meet Shakespeare, there was racism, but there was actually less than there was in the American South. They had suspicions about "Moors", but that was about it. They hadn't even started the slave trade yet. Then there was the time when the boys at that school in 1914 were definitely racist to her ("With hands like those, how can you tell when something's clean?"), plus there was the fact that in that time period, the only kind of person she could disguise herself as was a maid, because black women wouldn't have been allowed to be anything higher up. And then there was Bill who was verbally attacked by that rich prick, and the Doctor punched him in the face for it. But even then it was never as charged and violent as Rosa Parks' day.

The music sounds different because Murray Gold stepped down and was replaced by a new composer named Segun Akinola. So, yeah, for the first time since the show came back in 2005, you have a whole new composer. He's really, really good, but man I miss Murray Gold.

Here's the first very good episode of series 11! Now we just wait for Demons of the Punjab, and we're done.

Vidolin

It was filmed in South Africa
