They just took it a step further with what would happen to his consciousness up until the snap where he goes into the world line. They are considering someones consciousness as individuality and what makes someone a living person. So because he jumps into a new timeline and takes over the consciousness, he essentially eliminates one of himselves from time. In this case, a version of himself that grew up in an Akihabara that isnt the nerd capital of Japan. Which would be a completely different life.

He has explicitly said before that he's the only one that is keeping his memories from previous world lines, thereby implying he is not replacing those memories with new ones from the world lines he shifts onto. That's why he isn't aware of what's going on every time he shifts.

In Tokyo, Akihabara is the cultural center of Japanese pop culture (anime, manga, electronics, cosplays, etc.) and is arguably the otaku capital of the world. -- Incidentally, all the protagonists of Steins;Gate are nerds of some sort.
