Also, the reason Dexter did not let Lumen die is because she reminds him of Rita. As you guys have so eloquently pointed out, Rita died only a few weeks back, it's still fresh in Dexter's mind. Plus, by now you guys should have realized Dexter is not your run-of-the-mill serial killer. Moreso, he has changed since season 1. As much as I am not a big fan of this element in the show, Dexter's 'humanity' is something that grows throughout the story. Although it is hard to tell sometimes if he actually feels emotions or if he manufactures them from watching people around him, it is clear that he has evolved in some way.
