All in his head. As smooth as Kaz is in the air, he is clumsy and naive on the ground. I feel like you could convince him of pretty much anything.

However, I do think that curses of some sort exist in the Star Wars universe like Carlos says above if witches can exist and use the force in weird ways, then it is not to far fetched that some users of the force could use the force in other ways to place curses on people.
