Even though the ghosts/haunting might be real "within" the story, the story is definitely a broader metaphor for the generational damage caused by the loss of a parent (drug use, mental illness, broken/dysfunctional family dynamics, etc.) Most supernatural horror movies are a metaphor for dealing with some kind of trauma when you think about it: a lot of ghost films are about grief, The Babadook is about the stress of being a single mom, "It" was about extreme bullying and other things that threaten children, etc. Other examples?

In “Twin Thing”, In the scene where Luke gets his bowler hat, Olivia gives Nellie a box off buttons. She then frequently calls her “Buttons”. In “Bent Neck Lady”, while in the car, Luke asks Nellie if she’s still collecting buttons bc he will keep looking for some for her.

The casting for this show is soo good. Especially actors who play the kids. They are so sweet. I got teary eyed too.
