I sometimes forget that some of out quaint customs like Guy Fawkes Night might not be immediately intelligible to non-Brits. Celebrating the torture and execution of a man who tried to blow up the seat of government and kill the monarch might seem odd. It's not all that funny if you're Catholic and/or anti-monarchy, but we get fireworks and stuff.

Sherlock's explanation of how he survived the fall given to Anderson was how he actually did it - That's been confirmed by the writers. Also - The old man selling the porn was a nod to the fact that in the original story 'The Empty House' Sherlock disguises himself as an old man/bookseller and then drops the disguise to reveal himself to Watson.

Sadly, this season is the beginning of the end. both moffat and gatiss gave up writing good, well thought out stories and starting writing utter fan pleasing arsewankery from this episode on. Just like they did on doctor who. disappointed.

Sherlock went to Anderson because Anderson committed a crime to lure Sherlock back, something involving a thing titled “How I Did It, by Jack the Ripper(a Victorian serial killer whose identity was never learned)” Sherlock went to confront him over it and give him one last fake story to let him know that all the research he’d done over the years was wasted, and he’d never learn how because Sherlock is too smart for him. It was a punishment.

Loved the reaction fellas. When this aired my reaction was the same like omg he was so clever to devise this to survive, than I was like damn it Anderson..... so good. But I had heard it was built off real fan theories including the Holmes Moriarty fanfic lol. Can’t wait for the next one.

There was a conspiracy in 1605 to blow up the Houses of Parliament, the King and the entire establishment of England. Guy Fawkes was one of the conspirators, who was found underneath Parliament with dozens of barrels of gunpowder. Although he wasn't the ringleader, Guy became the public figurehead of "The Gunpowder Plot". Every year since then, a dummy effigy of Guy Fawkes is "burned to death" on bonfires all over the UK on the evening of November 5th, with family parties and huge firework displays - a bit like the kind you have on 4th July. :)

The fan theories in the show were all based on actual fan theories.
