FOX really screwed up badly with Firefly, the writing, direction and characters are just so good and you can see them grow throughout the episodes. Shame it never got the chance to have a full season

The reason this was aired as number #11 was that it was never planned to air at all. Fox only aired 10 out of 14 filmed episodes. However, after Fox announced the cancellation, another channel aired the unaired episodes, starting with "Serenity" and afterwards "Trash," "The Message," and "Heart of Gold." I don't know why the other episodes weren't broadcast but supposedly Fox rejected this pilot because they thought Mal was too dark, it was too slow, and they didn't like how Mal backed down from Badger (so essentially Jeyne must have been running Fox).

Episode 2 was made to be a new opening, that whole opening scene where everyone is introduced was added after Fox decided they didn't like the first episode, so it works as 1st episode. It was only the first sign Fox didn't care about the show, they would run episodes out of order and rarely would they air every week, as there would be several breaks

There's more to the Chinese than Calvin explained, though since it's never explained in either the show or movie, Calvin might not know about it. Basically, when humanity started to leave Earth, the Alliance formed out of the merging of the two remaining superpowers on Earth: the US and China. So yes, everyone speaks English and Mandarin. But as far as meta things go, one of the reasons they incorporated the Chinese was as a way to allow to allow them to curse without having it censored. I'd highly recommend checking out some of the translations for some of them after watching each episode, because some of them are really funny.
