Also, I think those sketches were from Mello and Near's childhood so that may not be accurate. I believe an extremely well done drawing would work BUT they also weren't sure if those were actually the right faces and on top of that Mellow's real name might not be a common spelling or one Light felt confident in attempting. It was stated during one of the ep breaks that if you misspell a name three times the owner will die - if I'm not mistaken. And Soichiro's death is so sad but like Ryuk said... he died believing his long-time suspected son was innocent.

since everyone and their mother is telling u about rems book i'll just say that misa couldnt tell light how much his dad had to live because it is displayed in shinigami time and she can't convert it.

Ryuk has a notebook (that he doesn't give to anyone) and one that he took from Sidoh (given to LIght originally). Rem has her own (given to no one until her death and Light took that one) and one from Gellus ( the one who died saving MIsa) that she in turn gave to Misa. So there are actually 4 notebooks but only 3 that changed hands - because Ryuk hasn't given his own out to anyone.

Humans can see the life span numbers above other humans heads, but those numbers don’t translate to anything we can understand. Only a Shinigami can know a humans natural lifespan by seeing the numbers. The third (note) would have come into play after Rem died from killing L. Light found Rem’s notebook lying among her ashes after she disintegrated.

Wasn't the 3rd notebook Rems and Light picked it up when she died so thats when there was 3.

When Rem died, she dropped her own notebook, which Light retrieved after she turned to dust. So there were 3 notebooks, the one Ryuk gave to Light, the one Rem gave to Misa, and Rem's own one.

Sketches were made based on other people’s accounts. It could be as simple as Light not being sure how accurate they are or if he doesn’t feel confident enough that he can picture Mello’s face on those sketches alone will be enough for the Death Note to work. Perhaps he is even concerned those sketches are outdated and Mello and Near might look different now (for example if Near got a big scar across his face but the sketch is before he got it). I can see why Light feels his dad who has actually seen the real Mello and not just a rough sketch has to be the one to write the name and kill Mello. Whereas pictures shown on tv or in case files are actual photos that capture the likeness perfectly not just guess work from people’s descriptions. We the audience know the sketches are pretty accurate, but Light doesn’t know how accurate they are without seeing them with his own eyes.

Light's original notebook, Light's book he took from Rem, Misa's original notebook. And the second notebook Ryuk has is his own at his hip.

Status of Notebooks; Ryuk still has his. The first Notebook was stolen by Ryuk from Sidoh and given to Light, and became the Yotsuba Notebook. It was claimed by the Japanese police, given to the Mafia, taken back, and now given back to Sidoh. Misa’s Notebook belonged to Gelus, who died saving her. It is now in Light’s possession. The third Notebook was Rem’s, who died saving Misa. It was claimed by Light, who now gave it to the Police Force as Kira.

Only the shinigami can translate the numbers into days, I dont think Misa knows what the numbers translate to.

Ryuks brought his own + Sidoh`'s notebook Rem brought (her?) own + Jealous' notebook. Sidoh took his own back so three left.

Ryuk tricked the king into giving him the mummy shinigami's notebook so he had his own and gave one to light. Misa was given the notebook of the dead shinigami by Rem. When rem died her notebook was left behind.

The numbers aren’t in human time units, so it’s incomprehensible for humans. So even a human with Shinigami Eyes can’t tell how much time is left

The third Notebook is Rem’s. After Rem died, Light got to it first, and he gave it to the Police under the pretext that it was Kira’s.

I believe there were three notebooks, one that Ryuk gave to Light, (which was the stolen one from Sido) one that was Misas and the last one was Rem's, when she died Light took it.
