Guru Laghima was the airbender who remained in the air without touching the ground for his last 40 years and he was also the one that wrote the poem "Let go your earthly tether, enter the void, empty and become wind.

the actual criteria to get your airbending tattoos is mastering 36 levels of the art. aang was only able to complete 35, but the invention of the air scooter made him technically qualify for mastery.

inventing a move does not make you a master but it helps - Aang likly got his tattos due to his Raw untaimed power as the avatar and his creativity - away for the airbenders to begin preparing Aang to take responsibility !!1

I thought it was interesting to hear Kya mention she had problems remembering all the gurus and Bumi said he never felt connected to the culture. It is entirely possible that when they were younger that they weren’t interested in Air Nation culture when Aang tried to teach them and it lead to him thinking they didn’t care so all the trips he took with Tenzin were more about the Air culture itself rather than the happy vacations Tenzin seems to think they were. I could see both sides misunderstanding the situation and not fully understanding the other party. Aang missing that Bumi and Kya felt left out, while Bumi and Kya not recognizing Aang did try to involve them in more things, but their lack of interest in the culture lead him to thinking he was doing them a favor by not dragging them around with him and Tenzin while he trained and taught him Air Nation culture.

I don't think 'warming yourself' has something to do with Airbending itself. That's more like a common meditation technique you can learn in real life as well.

That bit with Daw sensing the net coming because of his shaved head is literally my favorite gag they've ever done, in either series.

In Japanese martial arts, the lower dan are achieved just by demonstrating skills, but the higher ones often require you to make some kind of meaningful contribution to the development of the art--creating new moves or techniques, researching and recording the history of the art, teaching students, that kind of thing. I believe Chinese martial arts (like baguazhang, which is what airbending is based on) do something similar.

I thought it was said that to be a master you have to invent your own technique.

I think Buddhist monks can warm themselves with their breathing IRL, which is why they made Airbenders able to, too.

it was so nice to be able to see a new air nation actually grow. aang would have been so happy if he was still connected to the mortal plane through korra

I think it's been said before but here goes again; you become a master when you learn the 36 (i think that's the number) techniques assosiated with it, Aang knew 35 but because of his invention of the air scooter he was given the rank of master.

So excited for them, every episode after this one is simply amazing and helps define Korra as it's own excellent standalone series, much like Season 1 was.
