"The Drawf in the Flask"

FMA:B #40 Reaction Early Access!

Comments

hi

There is one other MASSIVE clue to what Father really is and where he came from, in his very last scene. SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS When being dragged into his (blank) Gateway, he says "Don't make me go back!" My theory is that he's part of the darkness beyond the gate--which, in turn, is the primordial darkness within which the world was made.

Paracelsus was not from Riesenburg, he was from a village called (I kid you not) Egg. There ARE records which suggest relatives of his may have lived in Riesenburg (modern-day Prabuty, Poland), but it's unclear if Paracelsus himself ever went there. Which makes it BETTER, because Hohenheim isn't from Resembool and doesn't live there during the main story--but his family does.

Arguably NONE of the homunculi can survive without a flask, they're just using flasks made of meat. (This is explicitly stated to be true of Pride.) The other homunculi use their philosopher's stones to repair their meat flasks when damaged and give them specific powers (except Wrath, whose philosopher's stone was used up in his creation and there isn't enough left to do the repairs). ..."Meat flask" sounds really dirty.

You should go back and watch the first opening again. The first 5 seconds tell hohenheim's entire story.

Rhop mentioned something about giving them all a list of the characters and some details about them and the plot to some extent.

They remember way more than some people give them credit for. Watching this reaction they pretty much remember most of the general plot and events, maybe they forgot some names or other details or other things, but they know enough that they can get by.

I know they don't read comments but, they should know that the "truth" isn't an entity with goals or consciousness. It's more of a force.

CaseOPictures

I don't think this is a spoiler since it is never really answered or brought up again, but as for the origins of the Dwarf in the Flask all that we know is basically said in this episode. He was created in some way from Hohenheim's blood, maybe through alchemy, but was not able to survive outside of that flask. Everything else we learn is in relation to their relationship moving forward from that. That eye and those "arms" are, like you guys mentioned, related to Truth. The fact that Father and even Pride utilize similar abilities is no coincidence, it all stems from Truth. This is all stuff known up to the point where you guys are at, if I unintentionally let any spoilers slip I'm sorry just let me know but that may help to clarify some things up to this point!

I think Calvin forgot that both Ed Ana Al broke up into pieces like that too, during trying to resurrect their mother. That's just part of equivalent exchange. In this case, what was taken were the lives of those people. That were also literally put inside Hoenhiem.

They'll eventually get it. There's another flashback in later episodes that will imply it more.

Missy

Nice catch. I always thought it was a badly drawn Edward but is young Hohenheim in Xerxes.

João Enes

This didn't make it into the edit, but in the full-length reaction, right after the episode ended Eric said: "People are going to be so pissed we watched an OVA last week" haha.

Ever Beltran

re-watch the first intro.

Man, have I waited for this.

By the way, both suggested names for Hohenheim are a reference to a real life historical figure named Paracelsus, aka Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim. He was a real life practitioner of alchemy, as well a pioneer in medicine and chemistry. And as an alchemist one of the things that he studied was the concept of the Philosophers Stone. Also he comes from the town of Riesenburg. Riesenburg becomes pronounced by the Japanese as Resembooru. Resembooru gets translated from Japanese into English as ... RESEMBOOL. Ed and Als hometown. BAM.

Glad you're doing the OVAs, do the gag real as well. After everything else though. You'll love it.

Herberderber

A consistent process shown in transmuting something with life is adding blood. Without a philosopher's stone they used the blood of a slave to create the homunculous. The apparent drawback of using just blood from one person, is that the creation is unstable and can't survive outside of a flask.

Andrew

Yessssss I've been waiting for this one...!

You missed that Father is the Sage of the East that came from Xerxes, founded the Amestrian Alchemy and apparently has some control over it since he can shutdown it; and Hohenheim is the Sage of the West that founded Alkahestry in Xing. He even says he knows some medicine. A little trivia: he is named after the Renaissance physician Paracelsus whose full name is Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim.

João Enes

Father is the Sage from the East, while Hohenheim is the Sage from the West.
