The series is merging two different attacks on Paris from history. One was led by a Ragnar generally presumed to be the Lothbrok of the sagas, the second was led by a Rollo. These were 40 years apart but the show has mashed history together to have these characters together. The emperor in the show is also a merger between the two really bad emperors who ruled West Frankia during these attacks Charles the bald and Charles the fat. The banner is the Oriflamme which would become the Royal banner of France in the following centuries, it being unveiled meant no quarter shown to the enemy. This was not always very effective, the French way well have lost several battles in the hundred years war because they had forced the English soldiers to fight to the death by displaying the banner. Princess Gisla and Count Doo Etc are historical figures from the second siege, the Frank's like the Saxons had a written record at the time so we know much more about them than the Viking side which all comes from contradictory and romanticised Sagas only written down hundreds of years later.

France would have plenty of records of the Viking sieges. Alot of people could read/write due to the catholic church.Unlike the Scandinavians of that day.

Vikings did indeed siege Paris several times. This is the first siege and Ragnar is listed as having participated, though its unknown if he led the siege or was one of several leaders. The shot they made with all the siege towers outside the city was a fully accurate recreation of an artist depiction of the first siege. So yes the series is closely following history in this part.
