Light did tell Ray that he wouldn't tell anyone including his father even though he shouldn't of known that Ray even knew who his father was and should of had no reason to say that to him. If Ray mentioned that then she would know that there was a person with connection to the police on the bus.

You guys are discovering my biggest gripe with the series. L and Light jump to the perfect conclusion for no reasonable explanation at times. The author clearly worked backwards with this series and had a hard time explaining certain escalations.

L is a word renowned detective because he’s able to create profiles in his mind of the people he is chasing after just by some bits of what they do. He can completely immerse in and understand someone else’s perspective and personality, so when you see him doing this stuff remember that he is doing this by comparing facts and clues with his image of what Kira should be like in his mind. As one YouTuber said, Light thinks he’s playing chess with L, but L is playing magical Harry Potter chess
