Table Top RPG Episode 11 Early Access!

I have never played a table top game, but as a fan of fantasy and scifi, I'm intrigued I might look up some basics of how you play and try to con my sisters who are also geeky into maybe attempting to play the game and see how it goes.

Being a DM/GM is like being a producer, director, writer, referee, librarian, and overlord/god, improve artist all roles into one role. You usually start out with certain "storylines" that are pre-written for you by the game creators, and various rules, plot elements, themes, items, baddies, and encounters that you may or may not use as the DM/GM at your whim. Most good DM/GM's, as a general good rule thumb, will familiarize the pre-laid out adventure before hand, tweak it, and add and subtract elements and think of alternate scenarios before hand, but the best DM/GM's will adjust on the fly in reaction to the players actions to tailor the story to make it an overall more enjoyable, dramatic experience for everyone involved and to tell a better story, but without necessarily twisting things unfairly or just because the DM/GM WANTS certain things to happen. It's like having a nuclear arsenal but choosing not to use it. The more you know about fantasy/lore/fiction/history/mythology and the like definitely comes in handy, as there are many tropes you can use on the fly to adjust the story while again, never taking over the story. It's like a parent wanting to teach their kid to drive. The parent knows they want to go to the mall, and the kid is driving, but the parent may make a couple stops that are either planned or thought of randomly during the trip, but the parent never takes the wheel. :)

Rick said everything since they started has been off the top of his head? I never played, so that really made me curious. If Rick is reading this, exactly how much pre-planning of possible story directions do you do? Can you give an example of some crazy tangent you had ready for them that they missed out on by choosing to go in a different direction?

I love how many times Rick kept saying the name of their original destination and they were just like do we really want to go to a library though? haha
