there is a specialization of air but it'll be demonstrated later on in the series. You'll never see it coming

They can't Roy (Lohman)!
They need to see Stephen Yeun's character and his story.
Plus the changes in the landscape are drastic so they'll just have to power through the episodes.

It makes sense when you put it that way, but... spoilers ...
2017-07-08 13:06:39 +0000 UTC
"there's no specialization for air" yeah, well, the Air Nomads were wiped out 170 years ago, it's not like there's been a lot of major developments to airbending lately. Let's not forget metal bending was INVENTED by Toph, and blood bending was INVENTED by Hama. We don't know about lightning, but it makes sense if that's a relatively new thing too. And airbending being 170 years behind every other bending form at this point, it makes sense that they have no specialized style.

Just some info. the character Mako is named after the voice actor of the same name (Iroh's) from the last series who past away during season 2. The way they pronounce it in korra is how it is actually pronounced.

Oh, and regarding the airbender tatoos: you receive them when you are deemed a master. The final criteria to reaching master status is the ability to create an entirely new technique. For Aang it was the air scooter.

Good point about Aang being the single point of the new airbender lineage, and how it could be influenced by his avatar training. Points to consider though: Aang never really strayed from his airbender mentality (shown in the dilemma of AATLAB's finale), even though he could vary his style to pull off earthbending etc. And we have already seen that Tenzin's temple is still incorporating original nomad teachings, concepts, and mentalities (Korra's gate training), so they still have access to a wider (second-hand) knowledge beyond just Aang.

As for the mud bending thing, Katara and Toph both manipulated mud at one point or another in The Last Airbender, so it's safe to assume both water benders and earth benders can.

I was scared that you guys would miss the name by the end, glad Eric caught it. :D Such a nice connection to the old series, even if the voice sometimes distracted me a bit first time I watched it. Some really interesting discussion this time too, as always. We'll see how much of your questions gets answered, but even if they don't, they spark some very good conversations.
This episode does have high points of humor (the airbending kids, though not all of the jokes hits home in my opinion), but that moment at the end with Lin is just so sad and so well done. And the looming sense of dread all-throughout as the Equalists are attacking, but with that spark of hope at the end with General Iroh on his way. And we got to see Tenzin kicking some ass, which was awesome. I really love this episode.
That being said, the upcoming one might be my favorite. But it's a week left until then! Can't wait.

You guys are asking a bunch of cool questions that get answers later on. Also you can’t learn combustion bending. You need to born with an overflow of spiritual energy in the chakra at the crown of the head.

And sandbending

2017-07-07 16:19:42 +0000 UTC
Hey guys when it comes to the different bending you have. Waterbending, Waterbending, icebending, steam manipuation, plant manipulation and boodbending for the Water Tribe. Firebending, Smoke/steam manipuation temperture manipulation, lightning generation and redirection for the Fire Nation. Earthbending, metalbending, and sandbending for the Earth Kingdom. Air just have airbending. Who knows though they may have others in the future but these are the different ones thus far.

Water has the most specializations--healing, plantbending, and bloodbending. Which makes sense, because water is the element of fluidity and adaptability. Fire is next, lightning and combustion--both of which are secret techniques limited to a few (at least in AtLA). Again, makes sense--fire is the element of knowledge. Earth has only one specialization, metalbending, and it was the last discovered, because earth is the element of solidity--it's hard to change earthbending into anything else. Finally, air has no specializations because it's the element of freedom--getting better at airbending is about expanding into a greater variety of moves, not narrowing down to specialize in a few things.
(Yes, I am deliberately ignoring [spoiler], [spoiler], and possibly [spoiler].)

One thing to keep in mind in regards to Yakone and Tarlokk; There are a lot of similarities to Ozai and Azula and Zuko. Where Zuko had to train harder to get as powerful as he did, Azula was essentially born with amazing potential. There is a reason why she was the only Firebender to have blue flames. Whether it's genetics or something else I don't know but there have been cases of people gifted with just stronger affinity for bending in general. I think the point Sokka was trying to make during the trial was that Yakone was one of these gifted individuals, who later passed it on to his son.

Why is General Iroh a coward?
Jackie
2017-07-07 15:24:43 +0000 UTC
The coward general Iroh arrived. He does not deserve the name.
Also, Lin was amazing and I hated when Amon took her bending. But he had to, she is very powerful and hurt many equalists. It is interesting notice how se smash rocks in their faces. Did the equalists ever kill anyone? Maybe, with the bombs thown this episode Or chapter 6. I guess taking away bending is near as bad as killing. Maybe that would not had happened if Lín had been a better chief of police and the non benders were satisfied with than City security system. I mean, Amón did not come out of nowhere and the rallies are crowded. She was quite incompetent. I liked her more when she quitted, she was not good in that work.

Yes, it is a very easy ability to abuse and can likely cause lasting damage. The way Yakone used it forced people's limbs to twist and bend in unnatural ways. Unlike the other bending arts which can be used in other ways blood bending can only be used to manipulate living beings against their will. It makes sense to outlaw it and prevent people from learning it.

Also all the air nomads were benders because of the emphasis of spiritual training and philosophy, and yes Aang was considered a master once he gained his tattoos.

I think to prevent everyone from having game breaking powers that bending forms like blood and combustion were just made to be very advance forms that only the very gifted or talented benders can achieve. While we see more lightning benders and metal benders I don't think they are easy to learn or that every fire bender and earth bender can do.

If you read the comics you'll understand how the nomads came about. They don't actually bend air. They just follow the teaching and philosophies.

I'd say the reason blood bending is so taboo is because it's probably the most violating of the techniques. Think about it, you gain complete domination of a person's body and strip them of free will. I can completely see why people would forbid it.
