With regards to the large amount of people who can bend lightning, metal, etc., I can understand how it seems to take away from the uniqueness these "rare" abilities had in ATLA. However, I definitely see it as a "standing on the shoulders of giants" type of thing. Someone had to be the first to innovate, and then everyone followed their lead and learned from them.

Yes Mako was named after Mako Iwamatsu and really is pronounced "Mah-ko", not "May-ko" (both of em). Also it's Ty Lee who was the chi blocker, not Mai Lee. You guys must really like that knife-throwing goth girl.

I like them all but to me Eric always seems to genuinely interested in whatever it is he's doing. You guys will love the season.

By the way, the voice of Amon's henchman with the goggles is played by Lance Henriksen. Coupled with Eva Marie Saint as elder Katara and JK Simmons, the voice cast of this show is kind of impressive. Just look up the voices of characters, there's a pretty good chance they're a familiar name or face.

Really? I think seasons 1 and 3 have good villains, but 2 and 4's were pretty disappointing.

Yeah, Bolin didn't exhibit the typical style of earthbenders, he was actually more like an airbender in the way he moved and was light on his feet

Next episode is so great. It's like a more mature version of Nightmares and Daydreams. The build up, and pay off cause for incredible storytelling. Especially for a kids cartoon.

This is a great episode because it shows Korra is fearful of what Amon can do. Her identity is bending, and Amon is anti bending. Back at the end of AtLA, the lion turtle instructed Aang (and said) "that before the elements we bent the energy within ourselves." This thread ties back, that Avatar Korra doesn't seem to be spiritual and is deeply rooted in the physical.

Lightningbending is still extremely rare. We only see a handful of people perform the technique.
2017-05-19 20:58:40 +0000 UTC
It seemed like lightning bending was exclusive to Fire Nation nobility as we only saw members of the royal family perform it. It stands to argue that with the dissolution of Fire Nation power and Zuko and Aang coming together to create the United Republic, the practice would become more commonplace and utilitarian.

Really glad you guys like how the world has evolved over time. It always seemed like a natural progression. And like you guys mentioned already, the music is fantastic. Same composer as last Airbender. Jeremy Zuckerman.

Iroh explained that at least the redirection technique was based on learning from the waterbenders. Iroh learning from another bending art is what made him rather unique in his time. Now that all the remaining cultures are learning from one another I think I makes sense that lightning bending is more common. Also they could be using lightning bending to supplement coal fired, or gas burning power generation, meaning the city may not be entirely dependent on benders for power.

I really think this show is really good. Especially with the whole politics of Republic City being really all twisty turny because really Korra can only trust Tenzin but any city is a jungle and people are corrupt in any city. I wont say Much about Amon story wise just that he was my favorite Villain of the four chapters.

When Aang makes the Zoo in season 2 , He is riding an air scooter while earth bending, so i think its shown pretty early that you dont need to be grounded for earthbending

The villains LoK will be more to your liking than A:TLA. I remember one of your chief complaints about Azula was she was a straight up villain with little redeeming qualities. LoK does try to make villains have more of shade of gray feeling to it. That is more up your ally I think. Amon is a different beast from Ozai, especially since his movement does have grains of truth in it.

I think the reason it seems like earthbenders have to be grounded to bend is because the fighting style Hung Gar which is the tradition style for earthbenders. In the second episode of Korra we see the way Bolin fights with a boxing style when he shows Korra and it's focused much more on moving freely than being planted to the ground. It definitely becomes more apparent as the show goes on. Even in the Tales of Ba Sing Sai episode Aang creates a zoo while floating on his air scooter.

Ozai was amazing, ATLA really built him up and the pay off was great, but I have to say Amon is my favorite villain.
