Supermonaman

So in regards to the avatar state and vulnerability: entering the avatar state lets him use the experience of past avatars to wield the elements like peak masters of each element. However, it does not change him physically. He could still be struck by lightning and killed or smashed by a rock or things like that. Moreover, this was different from past avatar states because he was in the process of opening up his chakra gates rather than entering out of anger/entering as a form of self-defense. Thus, he was vulnerable to attack in that moment.

Coup Coup ka-cho

In regards to what Aang did to unlock his last chakra, I think its more like he had to come to understand that he couldn't put his love of one person over the fate of the world, which is something he might have done once upon a time, but now he has sorta accepted the fact that the world comes before his own happiness. If that makes sense?

Eric Keatts

Agreed. Fantastic episode. It's sad it was never fully made.

Ky McKenna

Letting go of people specifically means accepting that we cannot have control over them or everything that happens to them. We can defend and protect like in Aangs case, but its being able to accept that there will be things out of our control. If Katara died, Aang would have to keep going. As the Avatar, the world needs him and he wouldn't be able to break down or lose his way like others can. He also would not be able to make decisions within the balance concept. In the words of Game of Thrones, "What's best for the realm"

You guys have to watch "Escape From the Spirit World" episode after book 2 episode 20 of Avatar The Last Airbender๏ปฟ

Katelyn Caltabiano

Yeah thats absolutely right. Its like in Buddhism, to have no earthly attachment to gain enlightenment. But, this will come back later on.

Without spoiling anything I will say that aang's quest to let go of earthly attachments was more of a mindset thing than anything else. The point that the guru was trying to get accross, and the issue that aang was facing, was that he cared more about Katara than his role as peacekeeper and avatar. To let go of katara is to understand that although he has feelings for her, he can not let those feelings overrule his judgement when it comes to the good of the world. He would have still loved Katara if he was sucessful, but he would have come out of the experience knowing that if the choice came between her or the good of the world, the world comes first.

The problem is that mortals like yourselves do not comprehend attachment, but I, as the Avatar, do. What is love and attachment? "Love and attachment seem pretty interconnected, but they are distinctly different. I would say that love is a positive feeling toward something or somebody, and attachment is an emotional need for something or somebody."

Keep It Zen

He let her go because that was the only way to save her life - he was being selfless

Karston James

Aang let go of his love/ attachment to her and everything that connected him to the earth - he could still care for her but not in a love way!

Karston James

There getting close to my favorite episode, the last one.

Kris

I think Iroh had no plans other then his tea shop but then when Zuko did his little siding with Azula . Iroh then made up his mind what his destiny was too do. I have been waiting for this episode for pure Eric reaction.

Wonderful interpretation!!

PinoyAkoPH

The guru never said he would have to abandon anybody. He said he needs to learn to let things go. Jedi still help people even though they don't have attachments.

Mten10th

The final Chakra deals with attachments and must be cleared in order for the avatar to fulfill their purpose, to maintain balance of the world, between the elements, between the nation's, and between the physical and spiritual world's. Before this point Aang would have done anything for Katara, but now, maintaining balance takes priority over all else. That doesn't mean he can't love her, but if he ever has to make a choice, between her or balance, he will choose balance. Whereas before this point he was not emotionally strong enough to make that call. That's the difference. He realized in that moment that Katara might not make it out of here, and that he couldn't allow that possibility to stop him doing what needs to be done. Love is nice and all, but it really isn't very important when it comes to being the Avatar. He needed to understand that. It's less about any decision he made, and more about personal revelation and understanding. He didn't let go of her, or the feelings he has for her, he only let go of the attachment associated with those feelings. He can still love her (past Avatars have married no problem, remember what Ko the Face-Stealer said), he just cannot allow that love to affect his decision making process. That's my understanding anyway, it is up to interpretation.

Ryan Kosier

I honestly can't wait until you all see the third season it's by far my favorite (though I do love the other seasons dearly as well)!

PinoyAkoPH

"She can take out the Avatar State that easily?" The Avatar State doesn't actually make the Avatar any more physically durable, it just radically increases their damage output. And it's not like Azula took him on in a fair fight and won, she shot him in the back while he was distracted. It's not that she's more powerful than the Avatar, it's that she cheats shamelessly when she's outmatched. She did the same thing with Iroh in The Chase - shot him in the gut while he was distracted, because she knew she had no chance against him in a fair fight.

Holy Stregas

And after everything he went through...Zuko Betrayed his uncle
