Scorpkin Animated Process GIF

Hope everyone has recovered from Halloween! I have a day-after-Halloween treat for you: A photoshop animatic showing the layer stages of the "Scorpkin."

November's monster is the Hog-Boggle!. A large and feral denizen of deep swamplands. While large and friendly, they are most well known for their incredible stench and poisonous drool. Coming soon....

Good question! The stage names in my process GIFs are "more what you'd call guidelines, than actual rules," to quote the pirate Barbossa. I do tend to stick heavily to the types of transparent layers I named early on, but other layer modes do sneak in from time to time as I work. But to your point, around that stage of color and soft light I do start to transition away from transparent modes and into low opacity normal layers. I think the blending of the layer modes packs a lot of visual information into an area and makes repeated viewings of it more rewarding. When transparent layers stop making sense for your image, try transitioning into low-opacity (like 50%) Normal layers and start working up to final color/detail from there! Try treating the early transparent layers as the setup and the final normal layers as the payoff. Hope that helps!

Hi Justin. Once again, your art is something from the extraordinary! I tried following the gif process on the where-bat illustration, starting from your drawing and trying to replicate your result, but when I came to the color and soft light layer part, I got lost. It seems to me like you used opaque layers as well during this phase, or are you only using soft light and color layers? Perhaps I should just try a little harder, then it will make sense. Sorry if this sounds really confusing! And thanks!
