This 1913 silent movie, now lost to time, is believed to be cinema's earliest depiction of lycanthropy. Directed by Henry MacRae and produced by Universal Studios, not much is known about the entire plot, but it likely drew inspiration from centuries-old European folklore about humans transforming into ravenous wolves under the full moon.
Though the film itself has vanished like a creature of the night, its legacy howls on, paving the way for a pack of classic werewolf horror films to follow in its paw prints through the decades, from "The Wolf Man" (1941) to "An American Werewolf in London" (1981).
The poster's eerie artwork provides the only surviving visual glimpse we have into this lost early milestone in horror cinema history. It was truly the alpha of the werewolf genre as we know it today!
