Haikyu!! OVA: Land vs Air

Heyyyy so yeah
You know I never lie on this stuff and can't do manufactured enthusiasm...
I guess I just don't get this OVA or it's purpose. Things looked very different, and it took me a bit to recognize characters that we know already. I dunno, the typical content delivery we get was present in design but felt different in product. Not a huge deal or anything, I am just talking with you all.

I will agree that the episode...seems forgettable?? A full match with Nekoma and Fukurodani would've been fun to watch; Like...these are powerhouse schools, right? But, yet it flew by so fast. That's my biggest pet peeve about this OVA. I will say that I do enjoy this art style more than the previous seasons, personally, although I know some may disagree.

Just to briefly explain everything this OVA is covering, this is the top 4 of the Tokyo qualifiers for the National Tournament. Two of the teams competing are Nekoma and Fukurodani which were at the training camps with Karasuno. Tokyo sends 3 teams to Nationals (due to it being a larger district) so when Fukurodani beat nekoma in the first match, they qualified for nationals. The 2nd match is between Nekoma and Nohebi with the winner taking the last spot for nationals and the loser being eliminated. They're just showing us these qualifiers because there are teams here that we've spent time with before and could potentially be opponents Karasuno will see at nationals. Also, season 3 ended with Hinata mentioning that Nekoma would be playing in the Tokyo qualifiers soon to see if they'd make it to nationals as well.

For season 4 you're gonna be confronted with a lot of odd looking scenes. One thing to really remember is that this season came out in 2020, so animators were working in extremely difficult conditions. Just keep that in mind and appreciate the scenes that actually do look good. We all felt the same way when it came out, but with the benefit of hindsight I'm more sympathetic to the studio now.

We care about the match because it’s Nekoma playing and with them being our biggest rivals, this Karasuno NEVER beat them not in season 1 or not in all of however many bunches of matches they played at the training camp. At the end of last season Hinata was saying how he wanted them to make it into Nationals to have their big OFFICIAL match, these OVAs are their possible path to nationals. The time spent with Nekoma and Bokuto is what’s supposed to make us care. They’re trying to fit 2 matches into 2 episodes so that’s why the pacing is faster but overall it’s still important to see if Nekoma makes it and the path they take. It’s similar to how in season 2 there was an episode where Aoba Johsai played Dateko and our team watched to see who would make it. The art style is different to match the manga but it’s still pretty nice and you’re not gonna notice any bad animation until maybe the second half of season 4 if you pause at some places but that’s because of Covid and how ppl were working when this came out around that time.

Also this content is canon in the manga, but the OVAs do really rush it and don't really give you the time to be invested or remember these matches (especially the first one) - granted they're not that important

yeah I'm not huge on the OVAs and this is the weaker of the two, as for the art style and production it does get better (and you get used to the art style) but as someone said earlier COVID definitely hurt it. The upcoming season isn't a disaster by any means but it is less consistent (fortunately there is a return to form right after).

I love this show and I've never felt the need to watch the OVA's lol.

As the other comment says, the art style shift for season 4 more closely matches how the manga looks, but I'm with you on not being huge on it (although I got used to it). The bigger thing to be aware of is that season 4 was made during COVID and there are unfortunately going to be some noticeable production quality lapses in parts as a result... Thankfully, some of my favorite bits of the story in terms of writing are in this season and I think that makes up for a lot. PS Go Hawks!!

I didn’t expect you to pick up on the art style change cause I didn’t on first viewing. But yea now the characters look more like in the manga after season 3. And I think they animate more creatively as you’ll see later.
