I think I would have done some similar approaches with loved ones... mistakes and all.

A little summary of the info at the end you mentioned: Apart from the shadows Shinpei and Ushio killed, no other team encountered shadows during their investigations, just stains of bodies. This led our group to conclude that Haine now wants to dedicate resources/shadows towards preparing for the festival instead of fighting, so Shinpei wants to try talking to the shrine priest, per Ushio's question about cancelling it. We haven't seen the priest much so far, just in scenes with lots of the other adults, like during Ushio's funeral, so you haven't missed anything about him.
