The Eminence in Shadow Ep 1, 2 and 3

Ok.
This was not anything that I expected. Very different vibe to this type of anime so far. Is the cringe coming? I am not sure if I am supposed to take it seriously as our MC sort of shifts in that regard often. The OST is killer tho! Great use of music and quite a variety of it so far.

I got a kick out of that. Good ole BBC

Larry Lee Laymance Jr

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣finally someone laughed at that joke

DrumRollTony

BBC: Background Boyfriend Character. Dude, I choked on my drink when you said that haha!

smileybones

Oh yea, and a lot of people say you need to know a bunch of shows and tropes to see the parody here, but imo not really since you've seen Code Geass. This is a parody of that kind of thing, the edgy overdramatic mastermind main character who somehow is always one step ahead when it makes no sense is exactly what this show is making fun of

JoeyGuy7

Some more context why this is so popular. The last 10 years or so have been plagued by hundreds of terrible cookie-cutter shows that are like this but played 100% seriously, so it's fun to see one that laughs at it. It also has huge crossover appeal because it goes over the head of the teenagers who love those kinds of shows lol so they like it on that level too. I was also puzzled by it at the start, but it does pick up the goofiness more and it's a lot of fun

JoeyGuy7

I don't mind this show but I don't think it's so cringe or degen that it couldn't have been on tier 1 or 2. Especially when it's up against astronomically down bad degen shit like Highschool of the Dead or Prison School, it just doesn't really compare.

peeps

Composer for the OST is Kenichiro Suehiro. His best works are this, Goblin Slayer, and Re:Zero. (Despite Re Zero as an anime not working out for you, Re:Zero has one of the best OSTs in all of anime in my humble opinion and would be worth checking out especially if you love this show's OST).

Chris Johnson

Yeah I think a few of the comments hit it on head pretty well. It gets pretty damn outlandish as it leans on all of the “cringe” isekai tropes but just cranks it up to 11. As for whether or not to take it seriously it’s meant to kinda be laughed at with how serious some of characters get in comparison to this goofy ass man who is rp a badass. Also the action gets pretty enjoyable to the eyes

kail santini

I've already watched the whole show. And I said "it wasn't Re: Zero levels of annoying", comparing it to a show Tony has watched and dropped. To me, Eminence in Shadow is not a bad show, but I DO NOT LIKE Re: Zero, and I was just drawing parallels between the shows as they both seem to be ones that "many people swear by them", but they don't seem like things Tony would like is all (I know how parasocial it sounds, but I cannot word it any better, heheh).

Unbeknownst Man

When you asked if the show was trying to be serious or tongue and check, the answer is "yes" lol. The world is generally serious but Cid doesn't take much of anything seriously himself (except for his "roleplaying"). Konosuba and Eminence in Shadow are both satires of the Isekai genre but they go about it different ways. Konosuba is more of a "spoof" as it takes all the usual Isekai tropes and completely reverses them. It's comedy is "up front" in that its obvious everything is a joke. Everything fails ridiculously and nothing goes right for the MC. We generally get all the opposites of what a normal Isekai would be. Eminence in Shadow takes all the Isekai tropes and goes the other way with it. It's more of a straight satire where it amplifies the tropes to the point they become ridiculous (the dials go to 11 here). Most Isekai MCs are overpowered and somehow everything goes right for them. But even at 10 Cid doesn't even break a sweat in a fight. He can just throw a dagger at a map, "misses" but somehow still gets the location correct. He gets lost in a dungeon but somehow ends up right where the bad guy ran away. He even tries to fail at asking a girl out and somehow still gets a date, etc...

CdrCain

You've seen 3 episodes what's so annoying about what you've seen?

makotheQ60

LMAO I was with you on that question 🤣

DrumRollTony

I had not noticed that. Lol that is funny. He needs to say bigger things if that's the case

DrumRollTony

Yes, it's him

Loayza

Trust me it gets more degenerate the further we go in 😭

STAR

I'd agree with this. They try to play on the "edgy main character" trope, but with kind of a tongue-and-cheek, silly fantasy world. It's like the characters have their "serious and deep plot" going on, but the edgy main character, with his isekai knowledge gives everything a twist.

Unbeknownst Man

I respect this choice for the tier, but while it's not Re: Zero levels of annoying, it does kinda lean more on that side compared to the previous cringe shows. I still recommend Prison School because, in spite of the "Highschool of the Dead" levels of fanservice, it still is, to me, one of the funniest shows because it doesn't take itself seriously. If Eminence in Shadow turns out to be a dud (not saying it is, but it could just not to be to Tony's liking, which is absolutely fine), I still think Prison School should be the next choice, hahah.

Unbeknownst Man

Also, I'm not 100% sure but it sounds like the voice for skel Is inosuke

makotheQ60

I was going to say that too like a horribly drawn version of Connie

makotheQ60

Have you noticed the random stuff that cid comes up with Magically becomes true in this world? Like he just looked at a bottle of alcohol and said, oh yeah, the secret organization is called The cult of diablos and it turns out they're real or how he threw a knife at a random spot on the map that had no scouted location and it turned out to be where exactly his sister was hiding? Cid is pretty much running his own D&D and everything he says comes true Also yeah don't take this show serious. Like I said in the discord, this is pretty much the one punch man of isakai's in that they are actively making fun of the tropes. It's meant to be hilarious and over the top

makotheQ60

I'm confused, where's the cringe and degen stuff? I never thought I'd be asking for it but the last 2 shows set some expectations 🤣

Frizen

That other kid in school with our main character (named Po) kind of looks like Connie from Attack on Titan to me. Maybe that is why he seemed familiar.

Jet Man

They were going for a similar vein of cringe as Megumin.

Robert

If you enjoyed konosuba then you'll like this show. People who call this cringe, do not enjoy these types of anime.

neZiiak

I can understand that. I haven't finished this show so I'm not sure if it gets better in terms of humor/cringe.

Mr_grandma05

Alexia's VA is the same as Mayuri's from S;G

Loayza

I love this anime for how "trashy" it is on purpose. Glad that you're seemingly enjoying it so far!

Xoulium

That was also said about Konosuba. They might not be really cringe for you because: 1. They're choosing shows that might be cringr For Tony not in general. 2. They don't want to go full cringe to the point that it's a bad experience. Like, people are paying for this Tier. It's just kinda hard to find a cringe show that is also worth staying for. (I don't know how people felt about HOTD but I honestly hated it, it was fun at first but then it became boring, if something like that was chosen again I would've just left) So yeah, this is more like a tier where shows that usually dont get chosen in the normal tiers get chosen here.

Lixien

Gonna miss the Konosuba moments haha. I haven't seen this one but looks like just the usual "reincarnated as the most powerful dude on earth" isekai. Anyway hoping to enjoy the ride

Dario Lizardisilva

Yeah it pretty hard to find "cringe" that also sticks the landing like Konosuba does. Most "cringe" in anime is just fanservice shit you wouldn't want to be caught watching 😅.

Bautista

That's a very far toss for the definition of cringe. Well, I guess it's subjective 👀

DrumRollTony

Cringe in the sense that the MC is someone who takes himself very seriously is his "Shadow" persona. He forces the edgy anime kid persona as shadow, while trying to be as regular as possible outside of it.

Bautista

Yeah don’t take it too serious, the mc is pretty much just larping the entire time

Gran_Air

It was suggested by people that watched Konosuba with me

DrumRollTony

Think of it as being a parody to solo leving sort of

Nusutto

I don't really know if this should be on this tier. I think people saw a anime they kinda like and voted for it

Mr_grandma05

The MC is suppose to be really cringe and the whole show is suppose to be like konosuba and gag on the isekai genre

Nusutto

100% not to be taken Seriously lol basically a high budget cringe series
