I just subscribed to watch your reactions to Re:Zero, and honestly, I get why you'd get put off by the fandom. The constant paragraphs justifying stuff in the comments can be annoying. If the show wasn’t already your thing, reading all that would definitely push you from not caring to straight-up hating it. Edit: Just saw ep 14 and 15 – you’re yawning, going in expecting it to be awful, and not trying to have fun. I’m willing to bet that’s mostly because of the fandom and all the crap in the comments. Your reactions to similar stuff earlier in the show were way different. People really do love ruining others’ enjoyment, huh? like, I was looking forward to moments like this 3:04, because normally people would jump or freak out when they think he went all the way back to episode 1, but this was ruined by the comments again, you were literally trying your best NOT to care, you had your brain shut off, you went "huh that was interesting" when other less significant moments in the show triggered a reaction, you're just trying not to enjoy it, which is understandable judging from the kind of comments you've been getting, and don't get me wrong, but it almost got to the point where it seems like you're trying to prove them wrong in a way by not enjoying the show (13:30) you're literally arguing mid watching trying to prove that the comments were wrong...

MASUCAULNE

Yeah I definitely should’ve phrased it better.

Nebula

I think you need to re read your original comment

DrumRollTony

It is the same location, I’m just saying that from your discussion it seems like you believe that he went back in time to when he first saw the merchant in the beginning episode but this isn’t the case. He visits the merchant again at a different point in time with Rem and that is the new respawn point. It is in episode 14 at around the 5-6 minute mark.

Nebula

I've been quite a long time follower of the patreon, and I immediately knew you wouldn't like the show when it got voted. I've noticed you like a specific type of anime, which is not the "mainstream" in the sense that a lot of the anime-esque tropes, usually geared towards younger audiences, grind your gears. (And fair enough, me too, especially as I've gotten older). Let me explain myself : You REALLY LOVED Vinland Saga, and rightfully so. It doesn't have corny dialogue aimed at teenagers, its characters have human depth (as opposed to a certain manufactured feeling of depth, where you feel like the show is trying to tell you HOW you should feel about this or that character and it's not hitting). You also enjoy less serious (or more "anime" stories) if they're not too on the nose, have good fights and animation, and are overall fun (say Demon Slayer, or Jujutsu Kaisen etc...). And of course, brainy shows are always a treat, like Steins;Gate (it manages to have a corniness that's well made, and fits with "real" human interaction, and its dialogue is more human than anime-troped). This is no general rule, as I think that Fullmetal does fit quite a lot of the characteristics above, but still, I think it's a decent general feel for your taste. Now to the important part : as you grow your community, polls will provide less and less anime you might enjoy, as I don't think they're what the mainstream or rather younger audiences watch/enjoy. The idea of compiling a list of anime with these criteria in mind (ask the community, we'll provide!), then going through them and picking 2 or 3 on which we could THEN vote, would be a good compromise. Sorry for the long-winded comment, but I really do think this would make your life easier, and allow for you to watch shows which you might enjoy more.

Unknowable

I just read your comment and it prompted me to go back and look at that part of episode 1 and then episode 15. It is the SAME market location and the same merchant with the grass in his mouth. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️

DrumRollTony

I will keep pushing Madoka Magica until it makes it to the poll (to inevitably lose) but the OST alone and uniqueness is something that I know will keep your attention + it's only 12 eps

Lulu

Yea i feel that has happened a few times now with votes

DrumRollTony

Lol I always find it funny when people recommend Re:Zero to others especially those who are newer to anime. I said he wouldn't vibe with it in the initial poll, but people will vote on their favorite anime regardless of any context to who IS actually watching it.

Lulu

Haven't watched the video yet but can already see from comments its not a show you're vibing with. Its a shame but it is what it is. Ain't a show for everyone. Someone else explained it best. Its like watching from THAT turning point of Steins Gate but not having investment in the characters so it just seems like random suffering for no reason. Either way I'm just here to watch your Steins Gate dub reactions 😂 the English Dub is excellent and I think does the source material justice in terms of translating the spirit of the original for a western audience.

DrumRollTony

We spent the last 4 hours or so on Discord talking about just that

DrumRollTony

I think Tony would dig Castlevania honestly. Animation is great and it's got a good soundtrack (though Tony would be the expert on that, not me haha). Also, I feel like he'd enjoy Trevor Belmont as a character. I'd totally watch those reactions.

CdrCain

Also if you do drop the show, I know you don't want to give the impression you're hating on the show, but just for the context of the channel as a whole it's still good for your viewers to understand what kinds of things you really didn't enjoy so the community can be mindful of that when recommending shows in the future. Of course some people will still ignore that, but for at least part of your community it can be helpful to us and you come future polls. For example SCREAMMINGGGGGGG, we all know how you feel about that.

Nick K

I guess where I'm at is that if you want to drop, I mean that's your call you know what's best for your channel. I just want to try and make the watch easier/in any way more enjoyable if for as long as you do continue it. I'll just kind of reiterate what I said before, if you don't like how the overall presentation of the show is, you're probably not going to suddenly start liking it more. If you're problem is mostly with Subaru that is something that will improve as part of the story. When it comes to knowing what's going on, it will get better as you learn key details, but I think based on your watch so far you might still find yourself lost after things get answers. As for episode 18, I do get why that particular episode would be an amazing episode for some people, but Tony I do not think you are the audience for that considering your relationship with the show right now. You might like the episode, but I don't see any chance that you think it's close to as good as that person hyped it to be for you. No way. Trying to answer questions I think you had or might not be clear on, if you're curious. Maybe some of this stuff you did remember, just throwing out there for context: you do not know why at this point why his respawn updates. When he respawns it is a true videogame reset, he goes back with knowledge but the world is reset exactly. When he respawns he comes with even more of the Witch of Envy's smell/miasma, this is the only thing besides his memory that changes between respawns. Rem/Ram and other magical non-humans can easily detect this smell on him. I think Betelguese really bothered because instead of a Heath Ledger Joker, you got a Jared Leto Joker when seeing the next big villain. I wouldn't read too much into it, he's just a fucking weirdo and as further proof right after he does weird shit he's cracking jokes and doing comedy bits. When you're not enjoying the show already it probably feels like you're just being trolled with a meme villain though. With him going back to the village each time, it is not related because of him that the place is being raided and everyone killed, so it keeps happening because that was going to happen, and he just keeps getting there at different times during or after it has happened. For the ice stuff at the end that keeps happening, info around that has been alluded to but it has been put forward directly so it's fine if you're like "wtf why did he just freeze and his head fell off, what's that giant monster, what." Many plots points in the show get bits of info revealed here and there gradually, so if you're having trouble coming back to the show, and wondering what the hell is happening, that will probably keep being annoying even when you do have context for things.

Nick K

Episode 18 is definitely a complete breakdown and rebuilding of everything there is about Subaru as a character and the situation he’s been in since he came to this world. While it is a great piece of fiction in that aspect, we all know it comes down to tastes. You might also be confused about the Market checkpoint placement, he’s right now getting teleported to the market like a day or two after his huge argument with Emilia, after that argument they were all pretty sympathetic and probably even pitied him. The witch cult is trying to attack Emilia because she revealed herself entering the Throne Contest, so last episode he got there late after everything went down and this episode because they left pretty quickly, he got there like as shit was going down and got kidnapped. Sorry the anime was a bit much in the wrong direction of things for you, I was hoping originally the checkpoints and problem solving aspects might help you enjoy it and I started watching the show because it won the poll and my best friend absolutely loves this show. So while I’m glad it won, or else I wouldn’t have watched it yet, it’s sad you aren’t quite enjoying it. If you did wanna drop it, this would be a pretty decent point to and then on to the greener pastures in store. Perhaps Haikyuu for a sports anime? Who knows.

BlakStatik23

As for my long explanation which you can feel free to ignore... The biggest pull of Re:Zero IMO is the emotional journey and unraveling the mysteries. It doesn't seem like any character has really captured your interest. So most of the emotional moments are going to fall flat. A lot of stuff doesn't get explained right away and, at best, you are given small clues. Watching Re:Zero is like putting together one of those detective boards you see in the movies with all those strings and pins trying to keep track of everything. A Re:Zero fan is the crazy guy you see in the movies who wants to show you the board telling you "it all makes sense! You just have to see the connections!". I'm a fan so I can say this about myself haha. However, since this is a show you are watching, you'll have to be invested enough to put together your own little detective board in your head to keep track. And I get that not everyone wants to do that or has the time. It's like if you ever played those old mystery/puzzle video games like Myst. Where you have no tutorial and nothing is explained. You walk around pushing buttons and stuff trying to figure out the rules, how to solve each puzzle, and what the plot actualy is. Normally I'd call it bad writing or bad game design. However, giving you no direct explanations is on purpose. You have enough clues (or in some games enough lives to retry) to eventually figure it out. You solve all the answers via the trial and error of the gameplay itself. I love games like that but I know a lot of people HATE them. Watching Re: Zero is like being a Twitch viewer to someone (Subaru) playing that game for the first time while you also never played the game yourself. You're either going to love following along and seeing if you can figure out BOTH the plot and mechanics before the "player" does. Or you're going to be yelling at the screen things like "why would you do that?!" or just turned off by the whole concept in general . And that's assuming you don't dislike other parts of the game or the personality of the "player" you are watching on top of that. Personally, I love all these things about the show because it's an awesome feeling to see how much you could unravel on your own. If you ARE hooked, you're going to love looking for clues and putting things together while you watch but if you AREN'T hooked you're going to be frustrated or just plain board. Subaru is also really cringe early on. I almost dumped the show because of it but I love his character arc now. He's still goofy later on and though he's grown into one of my favorite characters (unlike Zenitsu), I still don't think you'd love Subura. A side note is that a lot of people who relate to him, like myself, have been through a lot of trauma. Not trying to say you haven't (don't know your personal life and everyone's trauma response is different) but my trauma response is a lot like Subaru's. I've literally reached a breaking point and went from crying to being able to laugh and make dumb jokes all of a sudden because if I don't, I'd keep breaking down. So for me, Subaru's mood switching actually fits but I know for a lot of people it will take them out of the moment. Anyways, these are just "a few" reasons I think the show is not landing but I'm going to stop myself here. I have already written far more than I planned lol.

CdrCain

Hard agree sadly. Episode 18 will NOT work if you aren't committed to the series. I love the series but I understand it's not for everyone as well

Alejandro Pupo

I'm sorry if I'm being an idiot here and just misinterpreting, but from your discussion at the end it seems like you think that the respawn in this episode at the market is the same as from the beginning part of the show. It's not. Subaru visited the market again with Rem after the events that occurred at the mansion. On a side note though, I think the show is a safe drop at this point because one of the biggest appeals of the show at least to me is the characters, and if you don't like them, then there's no way to enjoy the show.

Nebula

Poll time? Maybe Castlevania since it won second on the last poll? LOL

Alejandro Pupo

I'm glad you did too! I am about to pull up today's DS reaction next, I can tell you loved it as much as I did from the title description haha. So I'm hype to see your reaction to it!

CdrCain

I had similar thoughts. I like Re:zero a lot, but it was not a show I was recommending for the poll but figured I'd be optimistic about it since it was happening anyways.

Nick K

I think you are right. And I'm glad I stuck with Demon Slayer. It's very enjoyable

DrumRollTony

Re:Zero is in my top 5 favorite animes ever. I love this show so much I have watched it 3 times. So take it from a die hard fan...that you should probably just drop the show and replace it at this point. Episode 18 is great but its only great if you ALREADY like what you have seen so far. It's not going to make you suddenly like the show if you don't already. You gave it a good watch just like with FMAB and I appreciate you sticking with it this long. I told you on the Demon Slayer reactions that I also hated Zenitsu (still do) but you would love the show if you stuck with it. I will tell you the opposite here. Its not going to be worth it for you to keep watching. I love this show and Subaru's growth in it but if you don't like the show by now, you won't really enjoy most of it. Also, there is a lot of yelling and crying in this anime and I know that grinds on your ears too. Your ears are really fined tuned and you catch so much in music that I miss, its one of the reasons I love your reactions. So that must also be annoying haha. What comes next is a comment with my thoughts on why I think its not hitting but feel free to stop here if you don't care about that. My explanations are always long so no hard feeling on my end if you stop here haha.

CdrCain

Time for a new poll??

JoeyGuy7

Holy shit I didn't expect the game. Still have to play it myself. Happy to hear that

Dakku

If I had to describe exactly how this show is for Tony is like watching Steins;Gate from THAT episode without the first half of the show, or a very bad version of it... and with some anime bullshit in the middle. The whole arc in the mansion for example was supposed to get you invested in the characters in there so you care when everything going to shit. And for other people it did obviously, but for for some people it just didn't (I believe I heard the Light Novel does a better job at doing that). So yeah, now the following events just DON'T matter at all. Even as a person that gives it a 7-8 out of 10 I just hate how bad this show tries to make you to like the characters compared to the first half of Steins;Gate, I feel like it had more potential.

Lixien

I like re:zero but when it won the poll I face palmed. If you think it's annoying or confusing now it's only gonna get worse. I'm just thankful you also decided to do arcane as the runner up

DrumRollTony

Yeah, would like to know your plan for SteinsGate as i'd like to upgrade for that as well in the future. Since there's another season and movies to cover which tie together the story perfectly.

SKAOG

Not sure what it is about episode 18 that you mentioned. It's really not a stand out episode, so not really worth to stick around for it, when you are this disillusioned with the show. Joined in december to watch you react to this, but I have seen enough ✌️. Gonna be sticking around for demon slayer. At least we can both be annoyed by yellow boy together.

Mike

Yeah I did watch a bit of your JoJo's reactions already as well. Just upgraded my tier and I'm about to start watching your Steins;Gate reactions ✌🏻 It's also in my top 3 and I hear you're gonna watch the movies and Steins;Gate 0 as well? If so then I can't wait to rewatch it along with you when the time comes 🫡

Dakku

I'll give it one more episode before dropping it.. not like it'll get better or anything. Next episode will just show the politics and intelligence to overcome a problem. Subaru's ability allows him to reset but the same events will still happen, he has to find the correct choice to stop the bad stuff from happening and when he resets he's traumatized after what he knows without people knowing and maybe come closer to why he has this power to begin with (* it's kind of like a mystery at first and more evidence gets revealed later until solved). That's the pattern for each arc (not really spoilers it's more complicated than this). It's a high concept show like the Saw movies or Quiet Place. The og Re:Zero is a light novel. The anime can't just copy and paste the manga panels on screen because they're working with just text. That's why there's so much emphasis on dialog and lower quality action aesthetics. Konosuba is also based on a light novel and have the same pros and cons.

Fuji Nami

I see the edit. Steins Gate is safely in my top 3. I did have a major freakout on ep 23... lmao, way too emotional, but I still love it and the re watch has been amazing. Dont leave just cause I took a 💩on rezero, we have fun here with a lot of stuff.

DrumRollTony

Back when the vote for this show happened I said something along the lines of 'there's no way Tony is gonna like this show'. I haven't been watching this reaction, but going from the comments it seems I was right? Is that what's happening? Is Tony gonna drop the show? Good news for me if so, sorry to Re: Zero fans. I watch Re: Zero, but it's definitely not everyone's cup of tea

Isaac Noël

WOOSH

DrumRollTony

Yes…speculation…that tends to be the pattern of stories with 2+ seasons and multiple moving parts. We’re spoon fed information as the world builds. Piecing together the secrets is half the fun of fantasy shows imo. But to answer your question the source material of the show are Light Novels that are pretty far ahead so everything is pretty well thought out.🤘

Jay R.

@dakku That was a great piece of music! I'll give the episode that

DrumRollTony

I joined your Patreon mostly because I wanted to see your reaction to Re:Zero since it's pretty much my favorite series, but I did have a feeling that you might not like it. I feel like your expectations were raised too high since there's a lot of people that like to hype it up. Either way I always wanted you to hear the piece that plays at the end of this episode so, quoting DIO - "I've seen enough, I'm satisfied." EDIT - I didn't know it would send if I pressed enter lol. Anyway I still have to check out your Steins;Gate reactions since I love that series as well and I see that you did too. Happy New Year man.

Dakku

Thx for the info

DrumRollTony

To answer your last question, Re:Zero was and is technically a web novel. It began serialization in 2012 on a website before a publishing company found it in 2013 and began serializing it as a light novel series as well (I.e. printed books). The series is still being released as web novel chapters before such chapters are collected, edited, and published as full book volumes. So order is web novel -> light novel -> anime. There are currently 39 books. This episode is the end of book 5.

GoatZ

oooo so it hasn't been explained yet and we have to assume 😂 🙋‍♂️🤜🙈

DrumRollTony

His save points have been changing throughout the show. It hasn’t been explained why yet, but we can only assume it’s once he’s achieved something or gained a new bit of knowledge that his curse deems valuable.

Jay R.

@dakku Exactly. But I wanted bro to tell me because I am THIS confused 😂

DrumRollTony

Well I guess it's like different checkpoints but at this point we have no way of knowing what makes a checkpoint "update"

Dakku

I was just trying to say that you don't seem to like the show and paraphrased a little bit with Character Growth as equals to watching the show So it was something like I think you should drop this Sorry if you may misunderstood in a bad way

Dario Lizardisilva

ok since I am THIS confused.. if it's so obvious then WHY tf does he spawn at the stand vs the manor at different times as we move linearly through the story???

DrumRollTony

It's a good episode if you're invested in the characters. That's true for any show but it really is in this case, if you don't care that episode might be even cringe.

Lixien

His save checkpoints basically change. I don't know exactly whhen or why it changes.

Lixien

What does "not sure if your patreon character grow will develop by watching "character growth" by seeing folk dying in many walls lol" mean?

DrumRollTony

18 one of the best episodes ever? Hmmm 🤔 Anyway not sure if your patreon character grow will develop by watching "character growth" by seeing some folk dying in many ways lol Hoping this comment doesn't bother anyone in here. I like Re Zero btw. Peace ✌️

Dario Lizardisilva

Yeah I mean if they are a huge fan of the show/characters, I can see why they love the episode. But that person selling that expectation to you who’s already not loving show is silly haha

James Moss

I am just repeating what was typed today in a comment. I figured it wasn't... I just get snarky when people make outta pocket exclamations

DrumRollTony

I just don’t think this show is for you dude😭 sure, there is a lot of moving parts, but they make sense with the information we have so far, everything else just hasn’t been explained yet. which takes patience with this show. But if your THIS confused now it only gets deeper from here so…

Jay R.

10000%

Owari

I think at this point it's safe to drop the show. Re:Zero is one where it either works for you or it doesn't. It's more of a character journey rather than plot driven, so the progression of the plot often times seems random because Subaru is in the dark about everything and we only see things from his perspective. It's definitely not in my favorite shows for the reasons above, but even I liked this episode so I think it's probably safe to say it's just not gonna work for you. (also episode 18 is NOT one of the best anime episodes ever. It's a good episode and even then it's only good if are already liking the show)

James Moss
