Steins;Gate Ep 8 Rewatch

Ruka in such an interesting position during this part of the story
So many questions

Steins;Gate Ep 8 Rewatch

Comments

the biggest problem i have with the no subs is when tony is talking and you cant hear the show, which is not a complaint, if i just wanted to watch the show again, id just go watch the show lol. but i havent watched it in like nearly 5 years, so its a rewatch for me as well, still loviing it though.

Red Menace

Not only TWO world lines, Alpha and Beta. There is Alpha Attractor Field with many Alpha WLs in it, Beta attractor Field with Beta WLs inside and Steins Gate WLs between them. Of course there are more WLs and we get them in VN but in anime we have only this three groups: Alphs, Beta and SG. Okabe is originally from Beta WL (ep 1). First DMail made a WL shift to Alpha WL. Till ep 22 including we stay on Alpha WLs. In the end of ep 22 we return to Beta WL. "Jumping between WLs" is correct interpretation. But I always prefer the different one which better reflects mechanics behind it. It is the universe (or the God) who's shifting WLs because our characters keep messing them up with their time-travel stuff like DMails, Time Leaps and Physical Time Travels. Okabe's memories just can "survive" this shifts. Don't confuse Alpha and Beta WLs, pls! :)

I'd only add that Mayuri's death is not smth SERN is directly responsiple for. In one of WLs Nae killed her by pushing in front of train. It's just an event Alph WLs are converging to.

That is insane attention to detail what

SimplySora

No, it's possible to put this info in DMail limitation - 36 characters. https://steins-gate.fandom.com/wiki/RaiNet_AccessBattlers You can find a board depiction for the game there. Cards are on 12 positions. 2 types of cards only - links and viruses. So the whole info may be encrypted in one line of 12 chars "VVLLV...". Then the line - "Faris cards"- 12 chars. Plus optional space between. In total - 25 chars. We even have space to wish Daru good luck.

d_swordfish

Minor but Moeka’s text said something along the lines of “What’s up? Sorry, busy doing/at (something) right now.”

SimplySora

Oh that's a good question

DrumRollTony

Wait, I might have caught the smallest plot hole ever. They said they sent a D Mail to Daru telling him the position of all the cards and all that. But they make it clear the amount of characters they can send is very limited in this episode with Ruka, no? So how did they convey so much info in such a short message… immersion broken, 0/10 writing.

SimplySora

Excellent. Thx

Okey-dokey, REMARKs are comming. 1) Let's go back to Mayuri's death again. There is definition - Attractor Field. Shortly speaking, it's a set of events that are common for many worldlines. It's said, these worldline converge to the events. The main event all Alpha WLs converge to, is that SERN establish dystopia by obtaining time machine first in the world. They can't finish time machine themselves, so in the future (of any Alpha WL) members of FGL build it for them. Mayuri's death in theory may make Okabe more motivated to build it. Why? Because he would be planning to outplay SERN and use it to save Mayuri. Of course he gonna fail due to WL convergence, but that's why I assume in majorities of Alpha WLs Mayuri is dying as part of a chain of unavoidable events. Perhaps, there exists Alpha WL where Mayuri is alive and SERN establishes their dystopia, but we don't know about that = we don't have any evidences about that in the show. She may die because SERN killed here, or she got hit accidentally by car - doesn't matter. In one of iterations Nae (Mr Braun's daughter) pushed her under the train accidentally. That's not like SERN needs to kill her. It's just unavoidable event in these Alpha WLs. 2) Moeka said them, that she want to convice past self not to buy a new cellphone. But she lied. In previous episodes, she as a lab member learned where Okabe got IBN5100 from - Yanabayashi Shrine. Remember who is Moeka and what's her aim? Since ep 2 we know, that she's looking for this retro PC, that's actually why she joined the lab! So she sent a DMail to herself with information about IBN location - the shrine. So after her DMail, Okabe on the WL where Moeka stole the IBN with rounders from the shrine. That's why nobody remembers her in the lab - she never joined the lab as now she has no motivation to do that. But she remembers Okabe because they met accidentally on the street same way that was in ep 2. But after that, she never was so persistent as before to join the lab. Ez pz. And yes, she wrote back: "What's the matter? Sorry, but little busy. I'll email you back later. Moeka". That actually doesn't matter. Lab members already do not have IBN5100, it's just will be revealed later. But keep in mind - IBN5100 is already slipped away from FGL members. 3) Before Moeka DMail Ruka came with watermelon and Mayuri asked him about cosplay. He said he is not in that kind of stuff. But after Moeka's DMail, she's not so against it when he visited lab. That's the way authors telling us - in the wolrdlines not only things changing (like soda in last ep, remember?) but also people. Not much, but changing. That will take place in the show again later. You said in the end about getting full picture. Check discord sg channe. I have smth in mind but it better suits Discord discussion.

As others have already commented, Mayuri ends up getting killed by SERN (or more specifically, the Rounders) in a series of random events where Mayuri just happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. If you're kind of thinking if there was a specific reason for SERN killing Mayuri, or if there was some of direct connection between the two, there is none. To Okabe (and us as viewers), it seems like SERN was somehow the indirect cause of Mayuri's deaths since SERN was the main factor in those first deaths, but when she ends up getting killed by the train in a freak accident, Okabe realizes that it was fate (attractor field), and not necessarily SERN, that was killing her.

Not sure If I understand the question but they killed Mayuri just because she was unnecessary. They just don't want any witnesses. Moeka doesn't actually get a new phone, she deceived them, she sent herself a message of the location of the IBN 5100 (since she knows from Okabe) so she can get it before him. He doesn't realize that they don't have the IBN 5100 anymore yet. Since the whole reason she comes to the lab was to get the IBN from them, the other characters don't know her anymore because she didn't come.

So from what I understand it´s as follows: There´s only two actual seperate WORLD LINES that Okabe is jumping between in this show - the alpha that he´s originally from and the beta that he jumped to after sending the first D-Mail (about Kurisu getting stabbed). Think of Suzuha´s explanation with the world lines being represented as ropes in the later episodes: A rope may look like one singular object but if you look closely it´s made up of many individual threads. What Okabe is currently doing with each D-Mail (after the very first one) is jumping between the threads. In order to skip world lines though he needs to skip to a different rope entirely. As for Mayuri´s death happening over and over: In each worldline there´s a specific set of situations that are bound to happen, as they are what make the world lines different from each other in the first place. Mayuri´s death is simply an inevitable occurence in the beta world line, not because of SERN, but because that´s just bound to happen, hence why she didn´t always get killed by SERN agents but occasionally through accidents or other circumstances. This is also why she kept dying no matter how many times Okabe went back in time. There was nothing he could do to fix the situation, he could only jump back to the alpha world line where Mayuri´s early death wasn´t set. And lastly the question "Why kill her in the first place if she´s not impeding the operation?" Because at the end of the day she IS impeding the operation just by being a witness. It´s easier to kill her than to convince her not to talk to police after having her friends kidnapped. Hope this helped!
