Like in terms of sales and cultural influence of the books themselves, the manga industry in Japan is multiple times larger than the US comic/graphic novel industry in the US. Even in the US itself, manga sales currently outpace US comic/GN sales. It's also one of the primary drivers of the anime industry (the majority of the shows you're watching right now are adaptions of a manga).

2024-09-13 18:26:32 +0000 UTCi dont think its hypocritical at all. jojo's has a completely different way of storytelling and dialogue between characters. the writing creates an atmosphere of weirdness throughout whereas in demon slayer the serious vs. non-serious bits clash sometimes instead of meshing appropriately.

Whether or not that includes licking spiders, I will leave up to the imagination of others. When Part 4 of JoJo has concluded, there is a mini series featuring him as the primary character if you are interested in checking it out.

In sales numbers local manga is almost assuredly higher, but comics are still popular, the author of one of the biggest manga/anime of the last few years, My Hero Academia, is a huge Marvel superfan for example. Tangential to what you were asking, but it's funny hearing interviews with japanese animators, because they'll refer to stuff like old Disney as "anime" because that's literally just what they call all animation. This delineation in the terms is a western thing.
